Hollywood Sets Summer Box Office Record of $4.7 Billion Despite Huge Flops

Hollywood earned a record $4.7 billion at the box office this summer — despite some high-profile flops.

The period stretching from the first weekend in May until Labor Day saw a 10.2 percent increase in revenue and a 6.6 percent bump in attendance.

Iron Man 3 led the way with $408 million at the domestic box office, followed by other summer blockbusters like Despicable Me 2 ($356 million) and Man of Steel ($290 million).

Iron Man 3 had a record box office opening earlier this year, but there’s plenty of footage fans didn’t get to see on the big screen.

In a just-released gag reel from the set, star Robert Downey Jr. can’t help goofing around, and even has to cut one take when he gets a case of the giggles.

The high-octane action franchise captured the #1 spot with a four-day take of $120 million.

Coming in a distant second place was The Hangover Part III with a haul of $51.2 million for the long weekend.

Meanwhile, holdover Star Trek Into Darkness grabbed third with $47 million.

Iron Man 3 won the weekend at the box office, beating the highly-anticipated The Great Gatsby, which debuted in second.

Iron Man 3 took in $72.4 million to keep the top spot.

Gatsby came in a strong second with $51.1 million.

And in a distant third was Pain and Gain with $5 million.

The third movie in the Marvel franchise, starring Robert Downey Jr., earned a whopping $173.5 million this weekend, making it the second biggest domestic open ever after its fellow film, The Avengers.

Coming in at a very distant second place was Pain and Gain with $7.6 million.

Nabbing third place was 42 with $6.2 million.

Robert Downey Jr. was injured on the set of Iron Man 3 on Wednesday, causing production to be halted.

In a statement, Marvel Studios says, “Robert Downey Jr. sustained an ankle injury on the set of Iron Man 3 in Wilmington, North Carolina while performing a stunt.”

The studio adds, “There will be a short delay in the production schedule while he recuperates.”
