Jack the Giant Slayer Climbed to Top of Box Office

Jack the Giant Slayer debuted at the top of another relatively weak box office weekend.

The fantasy adventure, starring Nicholas Hoult, earned $28 million for first place.

That was enough to comfortably put it ahead of second position finisher Identity Thief, which had $9.7 million in ticket sales.

Nabbing third was 21 & Over, which had a take of $9 million.

Identity Thief Steals Box Office Again

Identity Thief stole a slow box office this Oscars Weekend.

The Jason Bateman-Melissa McCarthy comedy earned $14.1 million, which was enough to beat second place finisher, Dwayne Johnson’s new release Snitch, which took in $13 million.

Alien family film Escape From Planet Earth came in third with $11 million.

A Good Day to Die Hard Wins Holiday Weekend Box Office

A Good Day to Die Hard will win the four-day holiday weekend box office.

Bruce Willis’ fifth outing as indestructible cop John McClane will rake in $28.2 million.

That’s enough to beat the Jason Bateman-Melissa McCarthy comedy Identity Thief, which will take second with $27.7 million.

Coming in third is the Julianne Hough-Josh Duhamel romance Safe Haven with $25.4 million.

Identity Thief won the weekend box office, with the Jason Bateman-Melissa McCarthy comedy earning $36.6 million, even as a blizzard batters the East Coast.

Zombie romance Warm Bodies took second with $11.5 million.

Nabbing third was the new thriller Side Effects, starring Rooney Mara, Jude Law and Channing Tatum, which had $10 million in ticket sales.

Melissa McCarthy stars with Jason Bateman in the new film Identity Thief, and while it’s fair not to like the movie, longtime New York Observer reviewer Rex Reed attacks the actress’s weight throughout his scathing piece.

After calling the film “trashy” and a “chunk of junk,” Reed notes that McCarthy’s thief character is “tractor-sized” and “humongous.”

But that’s not all.
