On Friday, Hilary Swank made her first major media appearance since controversially wishing Chechnya’s bad guy president, Ramzan Kadyrov, a happy birthday during a visit to that country in October.

“Shame on me,” says Swank. “The bottom line is, I should know where I’m going.”

As Gossip Cop previously reported, Hilary Swank and Jean-Claude Van Damme were among the stars in Grozny, Chechnya on October 5 to celebrate Chechen Republic president Ramzan Kadyrov’s 35th birthday party.

The problem is that Kadyrov, according to the Human Rights Foundation (HRF), has been “accused of using torture, causing disappearances, and authorizing extrajudicial executions” since taking office in 2007.

Now, the actress, who wished Kadyrov a “Happy Birthday” onstage, is apologizing for her participation.
