The “new queen of shock pop” supposedly drove around Melbourne yesterday… but it was the media who got taken for a ride.

As spectators gathered and gawked, “Lady Gaga” stopped into a boutique “to get her leather fix,” reports the Herald Sun. The superstar supposedly arrived at the Bettina Liano shop with a security team that stopped fans from disturbing Gaga’s private browsing.

Later, according to the paper, “Gaga and her minders” settled in for a long lunch at upscale restaurant Taxi.

One small problem — it wasn’t Lady Gaga.

It was radio personality Jo Stanley, who dressed up as the fashion icon to see if she could fool fans and the press.

Oops.

Maybe next time the Herald Sun will pick up a “Telephone” to verify Gaga goings.

Aussie actor Liam Hemsworth may be a new name on the gossip scene, but outlets are already giving Miley Cyrus‘ co-star in “The Last Song” the classic “treatment” in bad dish.

In a “short interview” credited to the Herald-Sun, Hemsworth responds to a question about whether he’s dating Cyrus by (supposedly) saying, “Miley is obviously not bad looking and a very sweet girl… yeah, we are great friends.” The comments about his rumored romance made waves immediately.

Tiny problem.

Hemsworth’s representative tells Gossip Cop, “Liam never said this.” “I believe this is a made up interview,” he added, saying, “They have taken answers from other pieces.”

Or from their own imagination.

At one point, Hemsworth “reveals” that he Tweets, and the piece gives Twitter accounts for both Hemsworth and his actor brother Chris. Don’t get too excited, though.

Liam “never would have a Twitter” account, according to the rep.

Gossip Cop thinks we can safely call this “reporting” from Down Under underdone.

“Britney Spears sends lover Jason Trawick home after rejected marriage proposal,” reads the headline in Australia’s Herald Sun.

According to the paper, Spears “was mortified when Trawick, her one-time manager, declined her offer of marriage in Sydney 10 days ago.” A so-called “Spears source” is quoted as saying, “Britney simply assumed he’d say yes and she couldn’t believe it when he said no… She was furious and embarrassed… So she told him to get on the next plane home and he was gone.”

Very dramatic. Very not true.

As a true Spears insider told Gossip Cop a little less than a week ago, though the couple is happy, “there was no proposal.”

Sites like Starpulse are reporting, “Meg Ryan appears to be back on the Hollywood dating scene after she was spotted enjoying a string of romantic dinners with Nip/Tuck star Julian McMahon.”

The blogs are pinning their stories on Australia’s Herald Sun, which says the “When Harry Met Sally” star has “recently been photographed on several ‘cosy’ dates with Aussie actor McMahon in Los Angeles, sparking rumors she’s found love again.”

Sorry to put out that spark, but the two aren’t dating. And a rep for Ryan even told Gossip Cop that talk of them as couple is “not true.”
