George Clooney finds the endless rumors about him ridiculous, but is glad Gossip Cop is around.

Backstage at the Golden Globes on Sunday, we asked the Best Actor winner about the absurdities of the celebrity rumor mill.

“It’s really sort of every day now,” said Clooney of the baseless gossip.

He added, “There’s so much of it now that is just made up out of whole cloth… By the time you wake up there will be 3,500 related articles who will say who knows what.”

“It is always sort of insanity,” continued Clooney, lamenting, “I used to think there would be some element of truth to it, but not so much anymore.”

The A-lister appreciates what Gossip Cop is doing.

“You have a wonderful site, because you actually are trying to find the truth,” said Clooney.

It was back on July 29, 2009 that we announced on “Good Morning America” and the “Today Show” the launch of the first and only site of its kind to separate gossip fact from fiction.

Since then we’ve reached a number of milestones, including 2 million unique visitors per month.

In fact, our online traffic now tops many of the long-established celebrity magazines we scrutinize every day.

We’re also excited that in two short years there’s already a Gossip Cop TV show in the works.

And we’re happy our efforts have been recognized by appearances on “The View,” CNN and “Rachael Ray,” and mentions in the New York Times, People and Us Weekly, to name just a few outlets.

Even a slew of celebs, including Justin Bieber, Demi Moore, Regis Philbin, Jessica Simpson, Bill Maher, and Kim Kardashian, have given us shout-outs either on TV or Twitter.

Most importantly, in the past two years we’ve been able to fulfill what we set out to do – bust bad dish and offer the most accurate celebrity reporting out there.

Gossip Cop has reached yet another milestone, a full month before its second anniversary on July 29.

The site had more than 2 million unique visitors in the month of June!

“We’re on a roll,” says Gossip Cop founder and Top Cop Michael Lewittes.

“We’ve got a TV show in the works, and with 2 million unique visitors a month, we’re crushing the tabloids we bust every day,” he adds.

In the past month, Gossip Cop also passed 50,000 followers on Twitter.

The site’s dedication to accuracy has been acknowledged by a slew of celebrities on Twitter, including Demi Moore, Kim Kardashian, and Justin Bieber, who called the rumor we busted about him two weeks ago, “the greatest of all time.”

We would like to thank those of you who were with us from the beginning when we announced the site on “Good Morning America” and the “Today Show,” as well as those of you who may be reading Gossip Cop today for the very first time.

Gossip Cop is happy to announce that we’ve signed a deal to create a television pilot!

Based on our model of busting bad celebrity news, the television version of “Gossip Cop” is being produced with TV Guide Network and will be hosted by Beth Ostrosky Stern.

This site’s founder/top cop, Michael Lewittes, will executive produce the Gossip Cop TV project alongside co-founder Dan Abrams and Michael Hirschorn of Ish Entertainment.

“I’m thrilled that Gossip Cop is being turned into a TV show, and couldn’t be happier to partner with TV Guide,” says Lewittes. “Right from the start TV Guide ‘got it’ and understood the uniqueness of the site and the potential for an entertainment show that separates fact from fiction in celebrity reporting.”

OK! magazine has agreed to publish a Gossip Cop feature called “Real or Rumor” on a weekly basis.

We’re happy to announce that we’ve teamed up with the celebrity magazine, which reaches six million U.S. readers per week, to expose the untruths that run rampant in the gossip industry. The “Real or Rumor” feature separates fact from fiction in stories reported in magazines, newspapers, blogs and on TV. It will carry the same branded look and feel as GossipCop.com. ”Real or Rumor” can be seen as a two-page spread in the issue that just hit newsstands today on pages 44 and 45.

Gossip Cop is excited to have the chance to bust bad dish for a print audience in addition to our daily online reporting.

Gossip Cop was the first media outlet to confirm on August 18 that Celine Dion was pregnant at 41 with her second child. At the time, her Canadian rep told Gossip Cop Dion and her husband Rene Angelil were “very happy.” Unfortunately, Gossip Cop must now also confirm that that is no longer the case.

Her rep told Gossip Cop, “It is true that Celine is not pregnant.” The rep went on to explain, “The doctor at first thought [the in vitro embryo] took but it did not. So she waited some time and tried again with no success… They plan to try again.”

The couple has one son, Rene-Charles, born in 2001.

Once again, Michael Lohan has released to Radar a secretly recorded telephone conversation with ex-wife Dina Lohan, and again, quite understandably, it isn’t sitting well with his daughter.

Lindsay Lohan, who has every right to be angry with her dad for making seemingly private conversations public, exclusively told Gossip Cop: “My father knows nothing other than how to sell stories for money instead of getting a real job like normal people do, including myself.”

And since he’s allegedly being compensated, Lindsay said, “I sure hope he’s planning to pay child support,” which she claimed he’s never done “my entire life… [he] never has paid!”

(Gossip Cop tried to find out how much Michael Lohan was paid, but a call to Radar, which is owned by the same company as the National Enquirer and the Star, was not returned.)

Irrespective of his reasons for releasing these secretly recorded tapes, the effect is still the same. Lindsay told Gossip Cop, “I hate him so much.”

Gossip Cop was wondering why we hadn’t been treated to Perez Hilton’s tweets, which, at times, involve mudslinging with celebrities, catty remarks, and grandiose declarations. Well, turns out Perez, who we thought believed in inclusiveness, BLOCKED us. That’s right, Perez has denied us the right to read his ramblings.

Gossip Cop doesn’t block him – or anyone.

Gossip Cop tweets all people equally.

Sure, we point out “Scoop” Hilton’s poor reporting and inaccurate posts, but we have also given him credit when it was due.

Clearly, Gossip Cop has gotten under Perez’s skin for correcting his mistakes and for keeping him accountable.

For the rest of you who aren’t blocked, tweet Perez the following phrase: “@PerezHilton, why are you afraid of @GossipCop?”

HOWARD KURTZ, HOST: Michael Lewittes, welcome.

MICHAEL LEWITTES, EDITOR & CO-FOUNDER, GOSSIPCOP.COM: Thank you so much for having me.

KURTZ: So with all of the problems facing the world, you’re devoting your time to policing bad gossip?

LEWITTES: Well, certainly there are a lot of problems in the world, but there are certainly a lot of readers of blogs, magazines, and people who watch different entertainment shows, because they want to hear about the celebrities.

But they’re entitled, as everyone else, to know the truth.

KURTZ: Well, sometimes you get denials from P.R. people for these celebrities. But don’t some of these publicists, what’s the term of art, lie for their clients?

LEWITTES: Well, certainly we understand that people are going to spin the story. And that’s why we call all of the parties involved if it’s a question about someone working on a movie, we try to find people on the set.

And we also have a little thermometer that measures whether a story is real or whether it’s a rumor. We listen to all of the evidence and then we make a decision based on that.

KURTZ: Now let me run through two quick examples. You reported recently on Gossip Cop that In Touch magazine reported that Tom and Katie—Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, were fighting, or, as it was put in tabloid-ese, “a shocking display of public anger.”

And then you had P.R. people for the couple deny that any fighting had taken place. But who really knows? Maybe they weren’t fighting and they don’t want to own up to it.

LEWITTES: Well, you know, there were a lot of people who were on the set, and there were certainly photographers who follow every move that Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise make. And those photographers really never caught them fighting.

Those photographers found them sitting in a park, relaxing, and maybe they weren’t smiling as if they were elated, but they certainly weren’t angry. And so we reached out to everyone. We found out there was no such fight.

KURTZ: You took on Star magazine for reporting that Jessica Simpson had supposedly been paid seven figures to write a tell-all book about her past boyfriends. That was not true?

LEWITTES: Complete nonsense. She has no desire to write about her past relationships. I think she would like her private life private, certainly she’s not going to expose it to the world for what was deemed a $5 million payday.

KURTZ: You also challenged Perez Hilton, the gossip blogger, for reporting that Michael Phelps, the Olympic champion, had—was to blame for a car crash that he was involved in.

LEWITTES: Well, Perez, in big letters, wrote that it was Michael Phelps who caused the crash. And then, of course, the Baltimore police that he did not. It was the Honda that caused the crash.

People like Perez Hilton and some of these other bloggers, they prefer to be outrageous more than they prefer to be accurate.

KURTZ: Well, you kind of lead me to my next question. I mean, certainly the track record of news journalists and political writers is hardly unblemished, but given what you’re compiling, why are there so many mistakes, exaggerations, untruths in this area of [reporting]?

LEWITTES: There are a couple of reasons. People would rather hear a more scandalous story about a celebrity than a boring story about their everyday existence. But the other real reason is a lot of these blogs are written by people who just want to have a salacious story.

And so they post it right away. But they don’t fact-check. And that’s where gossipcop.com is very different. We fact-check. I’m a journalist.

I’ve been in this business for 15 years. I know to call all of the sides, to call all of the sources, rather than just post the story without checking it.

KURTZ: But it’s not just bloggers, of course, you’re taking on established magazines and television shows. But, you know, what about this argument that people kind of enjoy wallowing in this stuff, and they don’t particularly care whether every detail is true?

LEWITTES: You know, one could argue that. And it is entertainment, and it is the entertainment industry. But at the end of the day, I think people really want to know the truth. And if just judging from the comments we get on the site, people are very happy to see the other stories, but then they come to Gossip Cop to find out if it really happened that way.

KURTZ: And which is probably good for your traffic.

Now you’ve worked at “Access Hollywood,” Us Weekly, New York Post, so are you kind of like a reformed alcoholic here?

LEWITTES: I would like to say I’m a reformed muckraker.

KURTZ: But in other words, didn’t you indulge of some of these—you know, obviously you sound like a careful reporter, but you certainly are no stranger to the gossip industry, shall we say.

LEWITTES: Well, you know, at the time that I was at The Daily News, right from the beginning, my editor told me that a tip is just a tip.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg, it’s the tip of the story, and you have to call everyone. You need to check your sources. You need to call both sides. And if it pans out, it pans out. And if it doesn’t, then it was a bad tip.

KURTZ: How unhappy are some of these gossip magazines and gossip bloggers and gossip shows with some of what you’re posting? Are you getting any pushback, are you feeling the heat from any of your targets?

LEWITTES: I haven’t really felt the heat yet. But they are feeling the heat. And I think they are uncomfortable with the fact that I’m checking up on them. That they can’t just post whatever they want now that there is someone out there who is watching them.

KURTZ: I’ve got 20 seconds. The fact that you knocked down some of these stories, does that prompt these organizations to retract, correct, or are they basically ignoring you?

LEWITTES: No. Some of them, even the biggest outlets who have put up big stories without fact-checking them, have pulled down those stories and then have said, or attributed to the fact that Gossip Cop had the right story.
