Gil Scott-Heron, the “Godfather of Rap,” has died in a New York hospital.

He was 62.

Scott-Heron, whose mixture of poetry and music in the early 1970s is often credited with inspiring the birth of hip-hop later in the decade, was HIV-positive and had battled substance abuse in recent years.
