Gary Ross has officially announced he won’t direct The Hunger Games sequel, Catching Fire.

In a statement released Tuesday night, the filmmaker says he doesn’t “have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule.”

A report surfaced Friday claiming The Hunger Games director Gary Ross has opted not to direct the blockbuster’s sequel, Catching Fire.

Ross, who received raves for the record-breaking first installment in the franchise, wants to focus on a different project, according to IndieWire.

Jennifer Lawrence will play heroine Katniss Everdeen in the film adaptation of the massively popular “Hunger Games” book series, Gossip Cop confirms!

“I can’t wait to work with Jen and see her bring this character to life,” says director Gary Ross.

“Katniss requires a young actress with strength, depth, complexity, tenderness, and power. There are very few people alive who can bring that to a role. Jen brings it in spades. She’s going to be an amazing Katniss.”

Matt Damon is slated to play Robert F. Kennedy in an upcoming film, his rep confirms to Gossip Cop. It’s still in the early stages of development.

The movie will reportedly follow Kennedy as he rises from the shadow of his slain brother, President John F. Kennedy, before being assassinated during his own 1968 presidential campaign.
