There’s a fierce battle to play Freddie Mercury’s female BFF in the late rocker’s upcoming biopic, according to Star.

“Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Kristen Stewart are on the short list for [Mary Austin], who played a huge role in Freddie’s life,” reports a so-called “source” for the tabloid.

The music mag’s blog, picking up a story from the Daily Express, quotes Queen guitarist Brian May as saying the group is “in talks” with Lady Gaga to be the band’s lead singer.

In a genius casting move, Sacha Baron Cohen has been tapped to play Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in an upcoming movie. The film will tell the story of Queen’s early years, leading pretty much up to the band’s triumphant performance at Live Aid in 1985, and will feature the group’s hits, including “Another One Bites The Dust,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “We Are the Champions,” and “We Will Rock You.”
