We’re a day late, but Happy Anniversary, Perez Hilton!

Back in August 2007, the blogger infamously posted an exclusive claiming Fidel Castro had died.

“Sources reveal exclusively to PerezHilton.com that U.S. officials will be holding a press conference shortly to announce the death of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro,” he announced.

We’re, um, still waiting for that press conference.

The funniest part about Hilton’s “reporting” that day was that he later doubled (and quadrupled) down on his 100% wrong bet.

“The announcement of Fidel Castro’s death will be made at approximately 4:00 P.M. Eastern, PerezHilton.com has just been updated exclusively,” wrote the blogger in an update.

After being proven wrong, a defiant Hilton posted a third story claiming Castro was dead.

It’s now four years later.

Fidel Castro is still alive.

Perez Hilton is still dead wrong.

In a stunning turn of events, Perez Hilton announced today that Fidel Castro has resigned from his leadership of Cuba’s Communist Party only four years after “dying.”

“He is 84, and as he leaves he begins to recognize the shortcomings of his party leadership, and is making some changes before he goes completely,” reports Perez.

What makes news of Castro’s decision especially shocking is that, according to Perez Hilton, the leader supposedly died in 2007.

Yes, lest anyone forget, the blogger once claimed to be “the first media outlet in the world to break the news of Castro’s death,” which would have been a great scoop had Castro actually died.

He didn’t.

The lesson: Perez Hilton, who tends to be a year behind on news about soap operas, probably shouldn’t be trusted as a source for breaking international affairs.

Happy Anniversary, Perez!

Exactly three years ago today, Perez Hilton posted a story that was among the reasons we created Gossip Cop. It was on this day in 2007 that Perez proved just how “dead” wrong he often is.

Perez declared, “Sources reveal exclusively to PerezHilton.com that U.S. officials will be holding a press conference shortly to announce the death of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro.”

Uh, still waiting . . .

He even boasted, “PerezHilton.com was the first media outlet in the world to break the news of Castro’s death.”

Yes, the first… and only.

Not leaving wrong enough alone, he updated his post 50 minutes later, writing, ”The announcement of Fidel Castro’s death will be made at approximately 4:00 P.M. Eastern, PerezHilton.com has just been updated exclusively.”

But after being “exclusively” proven wrong, about 75 minutes later Hilton defiantly put up a third story titled, “The Truth Will Come Out,” in which he stood “100%” by his story that “Fidel Castro is dead!”

Well, three years have gone by, and the truth has come out… Perez Hilton is still “100%” a clown.

One day, however, Fidel Castro will die, and Perez will finally be able to brag that he was the “first” to break the news of Castro’s death – of course, it will have been a good three years-plus before it ever happened.

Again, Happy Anniversary, Perez, and thanks – sort of – for keeping Gossip Cop busy!

“Tom Cruise Goes Into Couch Jumping Panic Mode At National Movie Awards!” blares a headline from Perez Hilton, who never bothers to mention where or when the awards were held.

For the record, they took place in London on Wednesday.

Moving right along, Hilton reports that the National Movie Awards were attended by Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, and even her ex-boyfriend and “Dawson’s Creek” co-star Joshua Jackson.

According to Hilton, when Cruise “found out he would have to walk the red carpet with Josh, he lost his little mind!”

Hilton goes on to write, “Sources at the event claim that Tom had his people call with all kinds of ‘stipulations’ to ensure that he would still attend. He wanted it confirmed that Josh and his GF Diane Kruger were seated far away from him and Katie. He wanted extra security, although what he thought Josh might do to him, we don’t know.”

Actually, “we don’t know” may be the most accurate comment Hilton has made in a very long time.

He does not know.

Nor do his “sources.” And are these the same “sources” he swore by when he exclusively declared that Fidel Castro was dead?

Anyway, Gossip Cop looked into Hilton’s claims about demands by Cruise, and not one checked out.

Additionally, a rep for Cruise confirmed to Gossip Cop that Hilton’s story is “made up completely. False.”

No surprise here.

For someone whose track record is so dreadful when it comes to guessing pregnancies, Perez Hilton seems very willing to attack other outlets for being just as loose with the facts.

Even when he’s been wrong about the very same case.

“Though rumors have been circulating” that Gwen Stefani is expecting, observes Perez, a rep has now confirmed that Stefani is “NOT pregnant.”

Um, actually, it was Perez who’s been “circulating” those rumors. First repeating speculation that Stefani was wearing a motion sickness bracelet to cope with morning sickness, then wondering whether a puffy shirt and new hair cut were meant to “distract” from a baby bump.

While Perez was busy with conspiracy theories, Gossip Cop actually checked.

Way back on April 16, we found out Stefani was not pregnant.

40 days (and zero actual reporting) later, Perez arrives at the same conclusion.

Gossip Cop assumes he was too busy discovering “Guiding Light” had been cancelled and tracking funeral arrangements for Fidel Castro.

“R-Patz And Blair Waldorf Are Shacking Up?” asks a clueless Perez Hilton, who goes on to write, “Gossip Girl star Leighton Meester has apparently been shacking up with our beloved Robert Pattinson!”

Perez, who calls Meester a “sneaky little maneater,” claims “sources have spotted RPatz entering Meester’s NYC apartment, and we’re guessing he made that good girl go bad all night long, because our boo didn’t leave until the next morning!!”

Would these be the same “sources” who told him Fidel Castro is dead and Jaclyn Smith shot herself in the head?

According to a magical spy Perez cites, Pattinson “ducked out of the building and hopped into a waiting car. He apparently spent the night with Leighton, and didn’t want anyone to know… She talks with Rob almost daily.”

In a misguided cheap shot at Kristen Stewart, the bad blogger then says, “SURE KStew is going to be EXTRA SOUR when she reads this.”

Actually the only thing sour is Perez’s “reporting.”

A source close to Meester assures Gossip Cop this tale is untrue.

Would those be the same reliable sources he relied on when he declared that Jaclyn Smith had shot herself in the head or that Fidel Castro is dead?

We only ask because, once again, Perez is dead wrong.

But we’ll get to that in a moment.

According to Perez, Lohan gets “paid in ca$$$h,” to which he then asks, “Drug money?!”

Not only is that inaccurate, but it also completely crosses the line.

However, Perez doesn’t leave it alone. After making that allegation, he tried to trend on Twitter the phrase, “#pray4lindsay.”

Yes, Gossip Cop saw that tweet, even though Perez is so afraid of us – and our fact-checking ways – that he’s blocked us on Twitter.

Nor did it escape Lohan’s attention. She responded via Twitter, “your statement couldn’t be more wrong in every single way. And I find your accusations and slanderous remarks to be gross.”

Funny, Perez is always alleging others have a variety of issues, but Gossip Cop seems to remember this very interesting Perez tweet.

“YES! YES! YES!” begins another piece by Perez Hilton, who can’t be bothered with accuracy.

Perez writes, “Reliable sources are saying that Neil Patrick Harris will be in the opening (sic) the Academy Awards number along with Martin Short in a song-and-dance routine choreographed by producer Adam Shankman.”

Would those be the same “reliable sources” who told him that Fidel Castro is dead?

He adds, “NPH is going to rock this and we can’t wait to watch!”

Well, Perez, won’t have to wait because a duet is NOT happening.

You’ll just have to wait to see what really happens.

In fact, Neil Patrick Harris even turned to Twitter to Gossip Cop this story. He tweeted, “I will not be performing a duet with Martin Short to open the Oscars. Misinformation, I’m afraid. Should I maybe pull a Kanye, mid-show?”

Now that would be interesting.

We always see a potential wreck when we see the words, “Sources reveal exclusively to PerezHilton.com.” (SEE Fidel Castro is dead and Jaclyn Smith shoots herself in the head.)

And Perez didn’t disappoint in a piece about Kendra Wilkinson, whose football player husband Hank Baskett lost in the Super Bowl. (And oh, Baskett plays football, Perez, not basketball.)

Anyway, in an article titled, “Kendra Keeps Up The Dramatics, Cancels Filming!!” Perez first writes, “All right, all right, we can only be SO sympathetic, but this is effin RIDIC!”

Then he claims, “Sources reveal exclusively to PerezHilton.com that Kendra is being such a DRAMA QUEEN about the loss that she personally cancelled filming of her E! reality show, Kendra, today!!!”

“How completely UNPROFESSIONAL! It’s JUST a game,” says Perez, adding, “Nobody died, sweetheart, the game didn’t go the way you wanted it, now wipe the tears, get your shiz together, and think about the entire crew of people who make a living following YOUR ASS around that you’ve inconvenienced by delaying your production.”

No, here’s what’s “effin RIDIC” — Perez NEVER fact-checks his stories.

Rather than Gossip Cop busting Perez (again), we’ll let Wilkinson’s words speak for themselves. She tweeted, “hahaha my show is filming me right now reading the article that I canceled my show..stupid ass LIARS!!!!!!”

She then further zings the bad blogger with another tweet: “get your facts right PEREZ before u say stuff!!!!!!!!! My camera crew is like my family!!!!!!!!”

As usual, what’s “completely UNPROFESSIONAL!” is Perez’s reporting.

Did Perez Hilton misplace his scissors and glue?

We only ask because his latest cut-and-paste job about Lindsay Lohan allegedly “making out” with Jessica Alba’s husband Cash Warren is an unfounded rumor that we debunked TWO DAYS AGO.

Perez, who’s fears Gossip Cop’s accurate reporting so much that he’s blocked us on Twitter, writes in his late-st post, that “a witness says they ‘started making out. Lip on tongue. It was raw. They were not shy!’”

Well, let’s examine this story.

First, it’s being repeated by a “Cop Blocker” Hilton, a guy who claims Fidel Castro is dead – and he’s the only one who has confirmed it.

Also, Warren and Lohan allegedly “making out” took place more than two weeks ago in a public club – and no one else reported it or saw it?

But instead of how Perez quotes a “witness,” whose name he doesn’t even know, how about what Lohan herself says?

The actress told Gossip Cop that she’s “just doing a [TV] show with Cash and it’s strictly business.”

Hopefully this wrong rumor will finally be dead (unlike Castro).

Sean Penn left his search for Fidel Castro in Cuba to meet with the equally controversial Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez.

Chavez told the nation’s television station that during a meeting with Penn yesterday the Oscar winner said he “was very interested in a film project … that would most likely be shot in part in Venezuela.”

Chavez, who called Penn a “friend of just causes,” said the actor wants to shoot a film based on the 1953 novel “The Lost Steps” by Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier. Much of the novel’s plot takes place in the forests of Venezuela.

This was the second time Penn has met with Chavez. Back in 2007, Penn traveled to Venezuela as a freelance journalist.

Gossip Cop can only imagine where Penn will pop up next.

Guess Sean Penn didn’t see Perez Hilton’s posts about Fidel Castro being dead because the Oscar-winning actor headed to Cuba as a “journalist” in an effort to interview the (still alive) Cuban dictator.

There’s footage already of Penn walking in Cuba with local painter Alexis Leyva. The actor/activist is reportedly hoping to interview Castro for a Vanity Fair piece about how President Obama’s policies have affected the Communist country.

Since he became president, Obama has eased rules about visits and money transfers to Cuba.

Well it ain’t so, and he’s the one telling the vicious lie “that Leonardo DiCaprio has become smitten with The City star Whitney Port.”

To be more accurate, “Scoop” Hilton lifted the false report – without fact-checking – from OK!, who realized their story was so inaccurate that even they pulled down their link. 

If only TWO DAYS earlier they had all read Gossip Cop’s piece, “Mag Makes Titanic Error with Latest DiCaprio Romance,” they would have had more timely and accurate information. At the time, a mutual friend of Gossip Cop’s and DiCaprio’s told us it was “not true.”

Hopefully, this wrong rumor will finally be dead (unlike Fidel Castro).

Didn’t we already correct this?

Anyway, Perez “Scoop” Hilton has done it again by posting a story that’s not only wrong, but also a day late – not “late,” as in “the late Fidel Castro.” No, just old.

This time he took the John Mayer has been secretly dating Kristin Cavallari for two years story. It’s so secret neither of them even knew about!

As Gossip Cop reported first thing YESTERDAY morning, “The Hills” are NOT alive with the sound of Mayer’s music.

Perez even wrote, “Props to you guys” for keeping this “under wraps.” No, Perez, props to you, for keeping your credibility under wraps.

This past week started off with a smattering of poorly reported Perez Hilton pieces. We learned that Perez doesn’t just turn a blind eye to fact checking, apparently he has one, too. He actually compared handsome “Twilight” star Robert Pattinson to the blue creature from “Avatar.”

This week also marked the second anniversary of Perez’s “scoop” that Fidel Castro had died – he was, and continues to be, dead wrong. And we also pointed how Perez got it wrong both when he initially reported that Beyonce was being sued by a reality star, and how George Clooney broke his hand.

And while we’ve grown accustomed to Perez’s inaccuracies, we were a bit surprised by how legitimate news agencies like CNN, the New York Times, and the Washington Post dropped the ball this week.

On CNN’s “State of the Union,” Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman was asked about the possibility of Alec Baldwin running against him for his senate seat. The major media picked up on Lieberman’s “make my day” response, but it took Gossip Cop to alert the other news agencies that Baldwin’s non-serious challenge to Lieberman was, in fact, an old comment the “30 Rock” star made to Playboy, and one in which he also said he had no plans whatsoever to leave New York.

But it wasn’t just CNN. The venerable Chicago Tribune posted a video on its website of a man, bearing a resemblance to Michael Jackson, jumping out of an L.A. Coroner’s van, and posed the question whether the King of Pop was indeed possibly still alive.

And the New York Times, Washington Post and the BBC were among those who were completely misguided when reporting that Bob Dylan might voice GPS directions after the the “Jokerman” singer joked on his radio show that he was approached by auto manufacturers. Who’s laughing now? (Gossip Cop.)

In “Twilight Tales,” a story brewed that Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart strolled through Vancouver to go out for coffee together. Gossip Cop filtered the fact out from the fiction. We also broke details about a second hard cover bookazine that Us Weekly is preparing about the Twilight Saga and its stars, slated to hit bookshelves around the time of the release of “New Moon” in November. And we’ve been all over the controversy of whether the Twilight Saga will be told in four or five films.

And once again stories surfaced that Pattinson and Stewart were moving in together. This time the yarn that was spun had Stewart buying a $3 million “love nest” in L.A. for them. Not true.

Miss Information: This week while it was true that Madonna was booed in Romania for speaking her mind about the treatment of that nation’s Gypsies, it was totally false that she’s training for a six-day, 151-mile marathon through the Sahara desert.

Katie Holmes was again the subject of several inaccurate stories. The tabs wrongly reported that she’s happier when she’s away from Tom Cruise, whom they also claimed controls her diet and career choices. There was also a tale that she’s designing “uniforms” for the Church of Scientology – it’s uniformly not true.

And with Lindsay Lohan’s burglarized home came a slew of stories claiming she had “incriminating videos” and more than $2 million in borrowed jewels stolen from her safe. Her rep told Gossip Cop than neither rumor was accurate. Another Lohan story, not based in reality, had her looking to star in a reality series about her own “trials and tribulations” finding work as an actress. Gossip Cop found no truth to that either.

Wrong Romance: The rumor linking Jennifer Aniston to Gerard Butler returned for another round – and it’s still false. Stories that “Phantom of the Opera” star Emmy Rossum is making beautiful music with Counting Crows lead Adam Duritz are also way off key. And the New York Post struck out in a piece about Yankees captain Derek Jeter being engaged to “Friday Night Lights “ star Minka Kelly.

Casting Corrections: Hundreds of outlets reported that Robin Williams, who starred in “Mrs. Doubtfire,” was asked to play “Britain’s Got Talent” standout Susan Boyle. (That’s like mistaking us for rumor cop.) Gossip Cop was the first to dispel that cross-dressing rumor. We also were ahead of the pack to report that Megan Fox is NOT signed to star as Catwoman.  And the story that Justin Timberlake and Snoop Dogg are doing a musical together also went up in smoke, thanks to Gossip Cop.

Miscellaneous Mistakes: Gossip Cop debunked the rumor that Gwyneth Paltrow told her husband Chris Martin that he should go solo from Coldplay; that Britney Spears is “pining” for paparazzo Adnan Ghalib, against whom there’s a restraining order; that Leonardo DiCaprio was told by the producers of his film “The Inception” to drop 30 pounds; that Hilary Duff refused to leave her trailer on the set of “Gossip Girl;” and that Miley Cyrus was offered more than $1 million to do a Guess jeans ad.

And – pat on our back – the British tabloid The Express had to eat crow after Gossip Cop corrected its fabricated story about Russell Crowe causing a fight in a pub outside of London. It never happened, and after Gossip Cop called them out, the paper issued Crowe a public apology.
