When HollywoodLife has an exclusive, you can usually count on it being exclusively wrong.

And, oops, the site did it again.

“EXCLUSIVE: We Hear Britney Spears’s BF, Jason Trawick, Asked Her to Marry Him & She Said Yes!” reads a recent headline on the blog, which goes on to say, “A source tells Hollywoodlife.com exclusively that the pop princess’ boyfriend, Jason Trawick, proposed to her during their recent Hawaiian vacation – and that she said YES!”

The site then ridiculously manages to contradict itself in the very next sentence by writing, “Nothing’s official yet…”

Recap: So he proposed, and she said “yes,” but it’s not “official“?

Here’s what is “official”: HollywoodLife is WRONG again.

Spears actually beat us to the punch, using her site to call the proposal claim “BS” – and “BS,” in this instance, does not stand for “Britney Spears.”

Whew! Gossip Cop is relieved to know that the tabloids are not taking a holiday break from trying to marry off Britney Spears to Jason Trawick.

In the latest installment, courtesy of the National Enquirer, “A furious Britney Spears blew up at boyfriend Jason Trawick while on a pre-holiday trip to New York City — because he didn’t propose!”

The article goes on to say that when Trawick initially suggested a five-day trip to New York, “Britney told her friends and family to prepare for a big announcement when she returned to California.” And when the couple arrived last Friday “Britney was anxiously waiting for Jason to propose.” 

However, when it didn’t happen two days later, reports the supermarket tab, “Britney was furious and demanded to go back home,” cutting short the trip.

Gossip Cop isn’t sure who among the family and friends Spears told “to prepare for a big announcement,” because all the folks we reached out to never heard of this.

Additionally, a source close to Spears has repeatedly stressed to Gossip Cop that these engagement rumors may be a tad premature. Added our impeccable source (who hasn’t failed us yet), “no trip was cut short… She was always supposed to return to L.A. [on Monday].”

Gossip Cop hopes the New Year brings happiness and love for Spears, but according to her schedule — not the tabloids.

Rumors of Britney Spears pressuring Jason Trawick to marry her have swirled for months, but In Touch takes things to a whole new level this week, describing the pop star as “moving full-steam ahead with her new mission — getting Jason to propose to her before the year is through.”

According to the magazine, Spears was in several Beverly Hills jewelry stores on December 9, “looking at engagement rings all by herself.” A “determined” Spears is aiming for a “big, traditional wedding in the summer of 2010,” and already has plans to urge Trawick “to cut back on his career.”

Interestingly, In Touch fails to mention by name any of the “several” jewelry stores Spears supposedly visited. Nor do they have any photos of her looking at engagement rings. They do have a photo of Spears in the Lisa Kline boutique on December 9, where she “never once looked up from her BlackBerry.”

Hmm. Casually shopping for clothes while e-mailing and texting… or frantically combing jewelry stores for engagement bling that you’ll force your boyfriend to propose to you with before December 31… it’s all the same to In Touch.

The tab may cling to ring stories, but a source close to Spears tells Gossip Cop the shopping speculation is “not true,” adding, “There is no immediate plan for an engagement.”

This is just classic.

A couple of weeks ago, Star magazine pretended Britney Spears had announced she and Jason Trawick planned to marry, printing a bizarre piece in which Spears was already preparing wedding aisle choreography inspired by the YouTube sensation of a couple dancing to Chris Brown‘s “Forever.”

Gossip Cop cut off the music, politely noting that there were no wedding plans.

Well, surprise, surprise! Now Star has a story declaring, “Weeping Britney tells Jason… The Wedding’s Off!”

What a deliciously convenient way to back out of earlier claims!

According to the magazine, the Spears-Trawick relationship suddenly “is turning Toxic.” A “family insider” tells the rag the pop princess recently called ex-husband Kevin Federline in tears after Trawick supposedly pushed for alone time with Spears, and made her “cancel picking up their sons, Preston and Jayden.” Feeling like she’d been forced to “give up a night with her boys” was “the last straw,” so Spears “made the heart-wrenching decision to tell Jason that their wedding won’t happen!”

Now “the warring couple’s marriage is on indefinite hold” as Spears and Trawick allegedly bicker on a range of issues.

Gossip Cop has seen this trick before, and we’re sure we’ll see it again. Tabloids feel like they can get away with making up whatever they like (in this case, a fictional wedding), because they can always undo the rumors with equally lame follow-up stories (in this case, a called-off fictional wedding).

Well, they used to be able to get away with it.

Since dozens of stories about Britney Spears getting engaged Down Under went belly up, outlets like The Mirror are moving rumors along by helpfully placing an engagement ring on her finger.

Spears “scrubbed up well in a plush mustard jacket after dinner with her beau and manager Jason Trawick,” the paper reports, “But it was the sparkler on her wedding finger that nearly blinded us.”

That’s not some of the information the Mirror provides.

It’s all of it.

In a journalistic triumph, the Mirror fails to give the “what,” the “when,” or the “where” of this supposed sighting, and illustrates the item with an unrelated photo of Spears that shows neither of her hands.

Oh, but they do include an obligatory and always informative  ”Oops!… I did it again” reference!

Gossip Cop salutes the Mirror for being as accurate as they are thorough (not really).

“Britney Spears sends lover Jason Trawick home after rejected marriage proposal,” reads the headline in Australia’s Herald Sun.

According to the paper, Spears “was mortified when Trawick, her one-time manager, declined her offer of marriage in Sydney 10 days ago.” A so-called “Spears source” is quoted as saying, “Britney simply assumed he’d say yes and she couldn’t believe it when he said no… She was furious and embarrassed… So she told him to get on the next plane home and he was gone.”

Very dramatic. Very not true.

As a true Spears insider told Gossip Cop a little less than a week ago, though the couple is happy, “there was no proposal.”

At some point the tabs’ desire to report accurately on Britney Spears will trump their impulse to create fiction around a pun on the phrase “Oops… I did it again.”

But we aren’t there yet.

“The pop star and her boyfriend Jason Trawick decide to say ‘I do’,” announces OK! magazine before launching into a cover story that begins with the “Oops…” line and devolves from there.

Alert Gossip Cop readers might remember the busted rumor from just yesterday that Trawick rejected a Spears marriage proposal.

In this version of events, Spears received “her boys’ blessing” and decided to “move ahead with plans for her third wedding in five years.” How does OK! know? A so-called “source close to the couple” describes a moment in Perth, Australia when Trawick tucked in Spears’ sons and four-year-old Sean blurted, “Good night, Daddy!” At which point, the tab’s eyewitness to the epiphany reports, “Britney’s heart simply melted” and she decided to marry her beau.

Having gotten her life and career back on track, OK! continues, Spears wants “a real wedding” (according to a “friend”) and has told pals she’d like it to be on a beach in either Costa Rica, Hawaii, Mexico or Australia. (What, just those four? How about Iraq? North Korea?)

And who’s attending the ceremony? Spears plans on “flying in about 200 guests – including close family and celebrity pals,” with Madonna, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, and ex Kevin Federline “among the rumored invitees.” The star’s parents are “all for her marrying Jason,” according to OK!, and after the Australian leg of her Circus tour ends, “Britney intends to put her bridal plans into action.”

Gossip Cop suggests Hilton, Lohan, and Federline leave their beach wear in the closet for the time being.

While Trawick and Spears may marry some day, it isn’t happening yet, and it isn’t happening because her son called her boyfriend “Daddy” in a moment that feels lifted from a syrupy made-for-TV movie. We don’t know why the gossip press is so insistent on Australia being the setting for Spears’ newest romantic leap of faith, but everything rumored from Down Under requires a huge leap of logic.

For what it’s worth, a source close to Spears tells Gossip Cop Britney beach wedding talk is “completely” untrue.

It’s rumored heartbreak Down Under for Britney Spears, whose boyfriend Jason Trawick supposedly “has knocked back a marriage proposal” from the pop princess while she tours Australia.

Wait… Spears proposed? Yes, the Sydney Daily Telegraph announces, “just as it worked its magic on megastars Elton John and Michael Jackson,” the city ”brought Spears to her knees on Friday when she is said to have proposed marriage to [Trawick].”

Well, it’s hard to dispute “magic.”

And a “source” tells the Telegraph Spears is “in love with the idea of marriage,” and that while she’s been wed only twice, she’s “proposed to many more.”

Ah, the convenient series of unverifiable non-events!

Spears “is said to have been devastated by the rejection” according to the paper.

Actually, we’re guessing she’s doing just fine. A source close to Spears tells Gossip Cop “there was no proposal,” and rumors to the contrary are “untrue.”

Guess Sydney will just have to work its magic on the next megastar passing through.
