“Days before Ashlee Simpson-Wentz filed for divorce from her husband, Pete Wentz,” writes In Touch, “she made another radical decision – to move in with her sister, Jessica Simpson.”

According to a so-called “source” for the tab, “Jessica told [Ashlee] she and [son] Bronx were welcome to stay with them until she was ready to find a place of her own.”

Simpson and fiancé Eric Johnson “have been taking good care of Ashlee and their 2-year-old nephew,” reports In Touch.

Adds a “source” for the mag: “There have been a lot of family dinners and lots of praying.”

Gossip Cop has learned that it’s absolutely true that Ashlee has received a ton of support from her sister; however, a family insider tells us the younger Simpson “did not move in” with Jessica.

“Ashlee & Pete Growing Apart,” declares a headline in this week’s In Touch, which goes on to claim there’s “trouble” between Ashlee Simpson and husband Pete Wentz.

What sort of “trouble”?

According to one of the mag’s sources, Simpson is “jealous”of Wentz’s career and his new, pretty and young bandmate Bebe Rexha. In Touch‘s source says “they fight about it all the time.”

What’s more, the tab claims Simpson “isn’t happy with her career,” causing a strain in her relationship with Wentz, and she’s taken to partying wildly, which is also “putting her at odds with her husband.”

So, is the pair really having marital problems?

Absolutely not.

A spokesperson for Simpson tells Gossip Cop that the story “is completely inaccurate. Ashlee is happy writing songs and she is incredibly supportive of Pete, as he is of her. They’re in love and remain committed to one another and their son.”

OK! has gone baby crazy.

The same publication that once claimed Tom Cruise was set to pay Katie Holmes $75 million for a second child and (wrongly) insisted… and insisted … and insisted that Jennifer Aniston was set to become a mom is back with more baby blather.

According to OK!‘s cover, a baby for Jessica Simpson has been “confirmed.” “Finally, A Baby For Jess” screams both the cover and the story’s headline.

So what makes the tabloid’s crack team of obstetricians — consistently wrong in the past — convinced that Simpson is expecting?

The actress showed off a “fuller-figured look” at a “July 4″ Greenbrier Casino Club gala, observes the magazine, which can’t even get the event’s date right (it was July 2).

OK! cites a doctor (who hasn’t treated Simpson) as saying that her tummy and facial features are typical of a woman “in her 10th to 12th week of pregnancy.”

Just in case that airtight argument falls through, OK! also points out that Simpson has a new boyfriend, Eric Johnson, whom a “source” calls “husband and father material.”

Plus, Ashlee Simpson-Wentz told Redbook last October that her big sister wants a baby.

Still unconvinced?

She’s working out and dieting regularly (which, as everyone knows, never happens unless the goal is pregnancy) and has “thrown herself into expanding her booming fashion empire” (which, as everyone knows, is what women do during the first trimester).

OK! explains that Simpson is doing more design work because it allows her to stay home.

Apparently, it never occurs to the magazine that she just likes designing.

Of course, it also never occurs to OK! that someone might actually check to see whether Simpson is expecting a baby.

Gossip Cop did — and she’s not. A rep for Simpson tells us the story is “absurd and not true at all.”

The only thing OK!‘s cover “confirmed” is the tab’s laughable track record.

We couldn’t help but notice the new Us Weekly, which mocks “Fake News of the Year” in a two-page spread, highlighting the wrong rumors its tabloid competitors printed during 2009. Busting bad dish is, of course, a great idea… but Gossip Cop wondered whether the magazine knows that old expression about how people in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones.

Yes, the Us recap includes lots of covers ripe for ridicule – the Rihanna & Chris Brown‘s “secret wedding“ in Star, the Robert Pattinson & Kristen Stewart roller coaster in OK!, etc. — but if the mag wants to talk about (ahem) “fake news,” let’s also be sure to remember that in the four months since Gossip Cop launched:

** Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel didn’t break up three months ago

** Michael Jackson‘s children weren’t made a part of the Jackson family reality series

** Jennifer Aniston and John Mayer weren’t “secretly back on” because of their “private” homes

** Mickey Rourke is dating Ana Makarenko, not marrying Elena Kuletskaya

** Lindsay Lohan did not make out with Jessica Alba‘s husband, Cash Warren

** Ashlee Simpson-Wentz did not imperil her marriage with wild spending

… we could go on.

The point is: Every weekly tabloid made a LOT of mistakes in 2009… and that includes Us Weekly.

Which brings us to another small point. Us Weekly may like to go after “fake news,” sometimes weeks, even months after it was reported, but Gossip Cop tackled many of those same cover stories right when they hit newsstands.

Seems to us the goal should be to nip wrong rumors in the bud, not to collect them long after they’ve blossomed.

Us Weekly is reporting that Ashlee Simpson-Wentz‘s marriage to Pete Wentz is in trouble because her ”splurging habits are out of control.” 

According to the mag’s unnamed source, “Things are getting strained” between the parents of Bronx, because the “Chicago” star supposedly “keeps spending all his money.” In fact, the tab claims Simpson-Wentz recently “spent over $20,000 on his credit cards and acted like it was nothing. He’s over it!”

A few questions: Where was the shopping spree? When? What did she buy? 

Us doesn’t have any of those answers, just allegations.

When pressed, a rep for both of them unequivocally told Gossip Cop that Us‘ “piece is a fabrication,” adding that the so-called “strained” couple “just celebrated their son’s first birthday together.”

Gossip Cop can confirm that Ashlee Simpson will be reprising the role of Roxie Hart in the Broadway production of “Chicago.”

Simpson, whose character recently wrapped on the TV show “Melrose Place,” starred in “Chicago” in 2006 in London’s West End, where she received good notices.

According to an inside source, Simpson will begin her Broadway run in December and perform for six weeks.

That same insider tells Gossip Cop that Fran and Barry Weissler, the show’s producers, were really pleased with Simpson’s performance in London, and had wanted her for some time to reprise the role.

This will mark Simpson’s Broadway debut.

Maybe this is why Perez Hilton blocked Gossip Cop on Twitter?

Perez just pulled off one of his patented late-and-wrong combos, posting an item that repeats the rumor Heather Locklear had Ashlee Simpson-Wentz fired from “Melrose Place.”

Of course, Gossip Cop busted this nonsense early yesterday morning, and revealed – thanks to show insiders – that Locklear had NOTHING to do with Simpson-Wentz’s departure.

It’s noteworthy, though, that “Scoop” Hilton seems to be evolving as a cut-and-paste artist! He now more frequently attributes his bad tips to their original sources, in this case citing the facts-challenged Star article that spoon fed him this bad dish.

Like a Dream Team of Sloppy Speculation, Perez and Star keep fueling wrong rumors.

Gossip Cop will keep fighting for facts.

Amazing! It took four Star magazine reporters to come up with a single page of text, and still it’s so riddled with inaccuracies that it seems more a work of fiction than an article.

In a piece titled, “Ashlee Forced Out! By Heather,” the Star claims, “Heather Locklear was gunning for Ashlee Simpson-Wentz from the moment she set foot on the Melrose Place set. Now Ash is history – and the prime-time diva couldn’t be more thrilled!”

According to a so-called “source,” Locklear “was jealous of Ashlee immediately… She knew Ashlee was one of the bigger names on the set, and she wanted her gone so she could make it her show. Heather is very political and calculating.” Adds the “source” in what is clearly a made-up quote about Locklear: “For a sunshiny California girl, she sure has ice running through her veins.”

The cutting dialogue, the intrigue… this fabricated story is almost as dramatic as an episode of “Melrose Place.”

The article also goes way off base when it states how Simpson-Wentz and her onscreen love interest Colin Egglesfield were informed their characters were off the show: “Producers told them by e-mail they were being let go!”

Well, Gossip Cop spoke to sources involved in the production, and here is what we learned. For starters, Star violated Journalism 101, says a source, who related that the magazine “never called to fact-check.”

Had Star done the basics, the magazine would have found out what Gossip Cop did which, according to a highly placed source, is that their story is “100 percent not true.” That same impeccable insider said, “Ashlee is a total pro, and Heather is a total pro,” but emphatically stressed, that Simpson-Wentz’s departure had “nothing to do with Heather, but was part of the original plan [for her character].”

Additionally, that whole thing about her finding out she was gone via e-mail… the insider said that, too, was “completely false,” and told Gossip Cop she was personally informed by producers.

Gossip Cop has said it before and we’ll say it again: We think we’re developing Carpal Tunnel Syndrome from having to repeatedly type the words “Star magazine” and “not true.”

“Scary Skinny Ashlee Simpson” is the title of a National Enquirer article that claims she’s dropping pounds to compete with the other stars of “Melrose Place.”

According to the supermarket tab, Ashlee Simpson “has been crash-dieting and stressing over how she measures up to her gorgeous co-stars on the CW series.” The rag quotes a so-called source saying, “She substitutes Red Bull for some meals, and snacks on nuts and other small things instead of having a decent lunch or dinner.”

OK, here’s the real deal. “She eats,” says a source close to the singer-actress, who acknowledges that Simpson’s “burning calories by the truckload, but it’s not because she’s not eating” to compete with co-workers. 

Gossip Cop‘s insider assures us that Simpson is healthy, but has lost a little weight because she’s putting in “14-17 hour days on set and running after a rambunctious 11 month old.”

Nice job, Enquirer, with exaggerating the legitimate weight loss of a hard-working mom.

There’s been lot of misinformation recently about Jessica Simpson and her love life. Some reports have her turning to online dating to find a new man. Not true.

And now comes a story from OK! magazine — known for putting words in other people’s mouth (See “Twilight” story below) — that Simpson is begging: “Help Me Find a Man!” 

According to OK!, “Jessica Simpson is turning to brother-in-law Pete Wentz to jump-start her dating life.” Not surprisingly, the mag even has one of its ever-ready unnamed sources saying that she’s hoping her sister Ashlee‘s husband “will hook her up with one of his hot, single friends.” 

Uh, no she’s not. Her rep tells Gossip Cop that rumors of online dating and Wentz wrangling “aren’t true.’

Apparently, Star magazine isn’t satisfied with the romantic intrigue actually ON “Melrose Place,” because it’s fueling rumors of behind-the-scenes flirtations between co-stars Ashlee Simpson-Wentz and Colin Egglesfield.

According to the tab’s piece titled, “Ashlee Crushing on Melrose Costar,” “an overly flirty” Simpson-Wentz “got touchy-feely with Colin between scenes on Sept. 23.” An ‘eyewitness’ tells Star the actress “kept grabbing Colin’s hand and hugging him repeatedly,” “giggled nonstop and did the whole hair-filp thing.”

Star then reports that husband Pete Wentz is aware of Ashlee’s “crush” and is very jealous. According to an ‘insider,’ “He recently caught Ashlee online Googling Colin and flipped,” and “they got into a huge fight over it and didn’t speak for days, and then he went on tour.” At which point, a different ‘insider’ tells Star, Ashlee invited Colin to join her for drinks after a day of filming.

We hate to “crush” this crush story, but a source close to Simpson-Wentz tells Gossip Cop, “It’s not true.”

Demi Moore was in Gossip Cop a couple of times this week. First, it was inaccurately reported that she was going to be in a few episodes of “The Beautiful Life,” produced by her husband Ashton Kutcher. But much more notably, “The G.I. Jane” star was in a battle with Perez “Scoop” Hilton.

Moore had had enough of Perez making lewd remarks about her 15-year-old daughter Tallulah. She rightfully objected to Perez tweeting out a photo of Tallulah’s partially exposed breasts with the comment “slut,” and a post in which the bad blogger showed a photo of the minor, hugging her dad Bruce Willis, with the word “ass” written over an area to point out where her jean shorts inadvertently rode up a little to expose a bit of her behind. Moore noted the inappropriateness when she tweeted, “Let me ask all of you, what is it called when someone is telling people to look and focus on a child’s ‘boobs & ass’ while providing photos?” Gossip Cop felt the only “ass” in this battle was Pervy Perez.

Actually Perez was (predictably) wrong about a bunch of things this week. He began the week by floating the rumor that Tyra Banks was engaged, based on a photo of her wearing a ring. Gossip Cop shot it down, explaining it was simply her old high school ring that the TV hostess often wears. Perez also picked up from dubious sources and reported as fact a ludicrous story about Madonna training for a 6-day, 151- mile marathon in Morocco. If you recall it was not only a tall tale that was proven false by Gossip Cop, but it was also one we debunked a loooong time ago. Again Perez was wrong and late, and not “late” as in the “late Fidel Castro.” Ha!

On the subject of Madonna, there were a few stories that were incorrect about her this week. One had Justin Timberlake jetting off to Israel to perform at her concerts. But Gossip Cop found the Israel story was not real.  We did, however, accurately report that Madonna and boyfriend Jesus Luz went to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Jerusalem home to light Sabbath candles. And despite being with Luz, In Touch reported that now that Sean Penn is getting divorced, he and Madonna will get back together. Totally false.

In the Random Rumor cop needed section, Gossip Cop called Chris Brown out on his faulty memory. He claimed on “Larry King Live” that he didn’t remember beating Rihanna, but Gossip Cop reminded him that he knew exactly what he did since he told People magazine, “I went to my mom on the same night and told [her] what happened and broke down.” We also pointed out how off Radar was when it said Salma Hayek had thrown a fit at the Chateau Marmont because its restaurant wouldn’t serve her without a reservation. While it’s true she was at the Chateau Marmont after having had a birthday dinner, she did not have a tantrum of any sort when she met her family and friends for drinks at the famed hotel. Radar has since pulled down its false report.

The Star had a series of questionable articles. First, its cover said that Tori Spelling and Dean McDermott were in a “loveless” marriage, and that the relationship “has been a lie from the get-go!” The source for the (mis)information was an alleged pal of McDermott who said on the record, “There is no question Dean is with Tori for the money and the fame,” and that their marriage is rooted in Dean’s desperation for the spotlight. Not only did her rep say the story wasn’t true, but Tori herself even tweeted, “R they kiddin? DON’T believe. Uggh. Hate tabloid lies!” We didn’t believe that Star story or the one that Ashlee Simpson-Wentz is talking to divorce lawyers after she suspected that her rocker husband Pete Wentz was cheating on her. Ashlee has since tweeted about missing her husband and son Bronx, and even a rep for the couple dismissed talk of a divorce as “absolutely not true.”

We reported as fact details of Selena Gomez’s trip to Ghana as a new UNICEF Ambassador. Gomez’s rep told Gossip Cop that the young star was in Africa “looking at UNICEF child survival programs,” and in the future would be “involved in educating, advocating, and fundraising” for UNICEF.”

Another true story was Russell Crowe beating a gossip columnist. The Daily Telegraph mocked Crowe for a fitness regimen of “smokes and fatty foods” after the Oscar winner was pictured having snacks and a cigarette during a break from biking. So he challenged a gossip columnist to a bicycle race through Sydney, which he easily won.

Fellow Aussie star Nicole Kidman was the target of an old rumor. In Touch reported Kidman’s kids Connor and Isabella no longer call her “mom,” and instead simply call her “Nicole.” These days, the weekly claimed, they call Katie Holmes “mom.” Once again In Touch was out of touch.

Gawker got it wrong and wrong in a piece titled, “Cosmetics Company Uses Kristin Davis and Then Kicks Her Out.” The story began, “Ahava Dead Sea Laboratories, hired Sex and the City’s Kristin Davis to help their image. Because she worked with the disputed company, she got the boot from human rights group Oxfam International. Now Ahava is giving her the heave-ho too!” It was not true that the “Sex and the City” star was fired from the Palestinian-leaning Oxfam International, with whom she still has a relationship nor was it accurate that she was let go by the Israeli company Ahava. Rather, her contract with the beauty goods company expired.  Gawker has since updated its site to reflect its two mistakes.

And Eric Dane and Rebecca Gayheart, the subjects of a recently leaked naked video, were accused in the National Enquirer of doing lines of cocaine at a Hollywood Hills party last year. The only lines there were the lines fed by a so-called source. A rep for the two stars told Gossip Cop it was a “bunch of lies. If it happened, where are the photos?”

Rest assured, Gossip Cop is on the beat this week patrolling the blogs, magazines, and TV shows so that you get the truth, and nothing but the truth.

The Star, which has had a bad week when it comes to accuracy, is touting a story on its cover, “Ashlee Kicks Pete Out!” which claims that Ashlee Simpson-Wentz is contemplating divorce after having “discovered what she believed to be evidence of her husband Pete Wentz cheating on her.”

The article quotes a source stating that when Wentz called his wife at one point while recently on tour, she yelled, “Don’t even bother coming home! I don’t want to look at you!” That supposed insider also told the supermarket tabloid, “They fight all the time and sometimes don’t speak for days.”

According to the weekly’s source, Ashlee’s been talking to divorce lawyers: “She wants to know how she and Pete would split their money and share custody of [9-month-old son] Bronx.”

Wow!

Of course, this sounds a little less dire — and accurate — when you read Ashlee’s Tweet from earlier today. She wrote that she’s excited to get back home because she “CAN’T wait to see @petewentz and bx!!!!”

Additionally, a rep for the couple told Gossip Cop the Star story is “absolutely not true.”

Ever since Gossip Cop posted photos from the L.A. premiere party of “Melrose Place” a couple of days back, we’ve been receiving loads of questions about whether Heather Locklear will join other past cast members, including Laura Leighton, Thomas Calabro, Daphne Zuniga and Josie Bissett, on the new show, which stars Ashlee Simpson-Wentz and Jenna Dewan, among others.

Good news: Barring a major negotiation snag (like money), it should work out. A mutual friend of Locklear’s and Gossip Cop’s says, “She wants to do it. [The producers] want her to do it. They’re now just trying to work out a deal.”
