Count Mary J. Blige among those baffled by the decision to select only two nominees in the Best Original Song category at this year’s Oscars.

After her tune “The Living Proof” (from The Help) – along with other worthy contenders – was left out of the nominations, Blige expressed her frustration on Twitter.

She wrote, “I’m so thankful for true fans like you all. It saddens me & feels like the Academy is being mean. 2 only nominate 2 of the 5 slots is….”

Blige then retweeted a number of supportive messages from fans who were similarly upset about “The Living Proof”’s absence.

The Academy nominated “Man or Muppet” (from The Muppets) and “Real in Rio” (from Rio) as the only two Best Original Song contenders, freezing out big names like Blige, Madonna and Elton John.

The first trailer for the 84th Academy Awards premiered online on Thursday.

In the promo, Josh Duhamel (with a mustache!) and his former Transformers co-star Megan Fox search for host Billy Crystal, who has gone “off the grid.”

The two eventually locate Crystal with the help of a few other recognizable characters.

Billy Crystal will host the 2012 Oscars.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has confirmed the news after Crystal revealed it on Twitter.

“Am doing the Oscars so the young woman in the pharmacy will stop asking my name when I pick up the prescriptions,” he wrote on Thursday. “Looking forward to the show.”

He’s hosted the Academy Awards eight times in the past, most recently in 2004.

Crystal replaces Eddie Murphy, who dropped out on Wednesday.

Murphy resigned after producer Brett Ratner was forced out amid controversy.

Brian Grazer is taking over the production.

The Oscars will be held on February 26, 2012.

Eddie Murphy will host the 84th Academy Awards.

The ceremony will be broadcast on February 26, 2012 from the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

Reports of the comedian leading the list of candidates began to circulate over the weekend, with the official announcement made today.

“Eddie is a comedic genius, one of the greatest and most influential live performers ever,” says telecast producer Brett Ratner, who directed Murphy in the upcoming movie Tower Heist.

“With his love of movies, history of crafting unforgettable characters and his iconic performances – especially on stage – I know he will bring excitement, spontaneity and tremendous heart to the show [co-producer Don Mischer] and I want to produce in February.”

Murphy himself has released a statement on the big news.

“I am enormously honored to join the great list of past Academy Award hosts from Hope and Carson to Crystal, Martin and Goldberg, among others,” said the host-to-be. “I’m looking forward to working with Brett and Don on creating a show that is enjoyable for both the fans at home and for the audience at the Kodak Theatre as we all come together to celebrate and recognize the great film contributors and collaborations from the past year.”

Eddie Murphy is reportedly a leading contender to host next year’s Academy Awards.

The actor’s name is said to be at the top of the list thanks to his relationship with Brett Ratner, who directs Murphy in Tower Heist and is producing the 2012 Oscars.

Murphy is interested in the hosting job, according to multiple industry reports.

Ratner and co-producer Don Mischer are slated to meet with Academy officials after Labor Day, with a host announcement coming later this month.

Billy Crystal‘s name has also surfaced in recent weeks for the gig. Crystal has hosted the show eight times, but not since 2004.

Murphy earned an Academy Award nomination for his work in Dreamgirls, and has occasionally presented awards before, but he’s never hosted.

We gotta say – it’d be an intriguing choice.

“Sandra and Scarlett Keep Their Distance at the Oscars,” reads the headline of a PopEater piece about Sandra Bullock and Scarlett Johansson that’s quite a distance from accurate.

Preferring to shun fact for friction, the piece claims, “The rift between once-good friends Sandra Bullock and Scarlett Johansson still appears to be going strong, with both ladies avoiding each other like the plague at the Academy Awards on Sunday.”

A so-called “insider” further tells PopEater, “They both knew the other was presenting so it was no surprise that they would be at the same event, but they sure managed to keep away from one another.”

Uh, huh…

PopEater explains, “Any tension between the two ladies comes from the fact that since Scarlett and her husband Ryan Reynolds filed for divorce in December, Sandra has been seen multiple times with the actor.”

Adds the site, “Scarlett showed up at the Oscars with her agent, Joe Machota, by her side, while Sandra, wearing blazing red, looked happy working the carpet all by herself.”

Oh, where do we start?

Actually, PopEater’s “insider” must be a complete outsider, because Bullock was on the red carpet was with her high-powered publicist and agent, not “all by herself.”

Also, there is NOTHING going on between Bullock and Reynolds.

And, as for the larger point about the “avoiding each other like the plague,” it’s totally fabricated and untrue.

Bullock and Johansson are friends and – far from avoiding each other – they greeted one another in the lobby of the Kodak Theater with a hug and kiss before the awards.

Shortly before the Oscars began, Bullock was talking to her pal Matthew McConaughey and his partner Camila Alves when Johansson made a point of coming up to Bullock and McConaughey, with whom she later presented the Oscar for Best Sound Mixing.

Oops.

Maybe PopEater should distance itself from this tall tale about the two actresses avoiding each other.

James Franco is getting ready to co-host the Academy Awards for the first time, and he’s been hard at work on a special version of Cher‘s “You Haven’t Seen The Last of Me” (from Burlesque) for Sunday’s telecast.

Sadly, it didn’t make the cut.

Franco just tweeted his moving rendition of “Oscar Song,” along with faux outrage: “they pulled this from the oscar show. damn it.”

Camille Grammer, who recently appeared on “$#*! My Dad Says,” just got another TV gig.

The “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” star will do on-air commentary for CNN’s coverage of the Oscars next Sunday. Grammer will be part of the red carpet team for “Showbiz Tonight.”

“We can’t wait to get Camille’s unabashed take on Hollywood’s biggest night. She will be perfect for ‘Showbiz Tonight,’” the show’s executive producer Dave Levine said in a statement.

Grammer finalized her divorce from ex-husband Kelsey a week and a half ago.

James Franco was recently part of a Newsweek roundtable of Oscar hopefuls, including Natalie Portman, Colin Firth, Annette Bening, Michelle Williams and Nicole Kidman, and when asked by the magazine about certain acting techniques, the Oscar-nominated actor and host of the Academy Awards let slip that he once made a homemade porno.

After being queried about the “secret to landing a good kiss” onscreen, Franco replied, “I think if anybody who has made a home sex tape knows, what feels best doesn’t always look best [laughter]. I remember when I was 19 doing that, and then watching it back and thinking, oh, that looks horrible.”

He added that he has “a lot of respect for those actors in pornography, because they are really not just doing it, they’re really selling it. It’s the same thing with a kiss. It’s not just the kiss that feels best, it’s an image. Something different is happening if it’s a good kiss.”

This year’s Oscar nominations were announced this morning, and while the Academy recognized a lot of great work, there were more than a few snubs.

Michelle Williams received a nod for her role in Blue Valentine (a Best Actress nomination), but co-star Ryan Gosling was overlooked.

The Social Network stars Andrew Garfield and Justin Timberlake were both left out of the Best Supporting Actor category.

Similarly, Mila Kunis (Black Swan), Julianne Moore (The Kids Are All Right) and Mark Wahlberg (The Fighter) were also passed over.

And, while Christopher Nolan was nominated for Best Original Screenplay and Inception was given a nod for Best Picture, Nolan was left out of the Best Director category.

“Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes may boycott next month’s Oscars ceremony because they don’t want an awkward red carpet confrontation with the host, Anne Hathaway,” begins a story in the Daily Mail that got picked up by numerous outlets.

The reason?

According to the tab, the couple is upset over a “Saturday Night Live” sketch from November in which Hathaway did a cutting impression of Holmes.

“The whole thing has left a sour taste with Tom,” a so-called “source” tells the Daily Mail.

As a result, says the source, “Tom and Katie don’t want to have to cross paths with Anne” at the Academy Awards.

Interesting, but…

Completely “ridiculous,” says a source close to the couple, who explains that “no one knows,” at this point, who will and won’t be at the Oscars because “nominations haven’t been announced” – and, to an extent, it’s the nominations “which dictate the presenters.”

Gossip Cop‘s impeccable source adds if Cruise isn’t at the Academy Awards, it’s because ”he is shooting a film that has to wrap,” and not because of an SNL skit.

Anne Hathaway totally surprised students at P.S. 22 in New York during their Annual Winter Concert last night.

First, Academy Awards producer Bruce Cohen introduced himself to the assembled students and parents, who were there to hear the school’s chorus perform holiday songs. Then, Cohen told the children he had a surprise for them, and asked if they would like to meet one of the Oscars’ hosts.

To the shock and joy of the kids, Hathaway walked out and told members of P.S. 22′s chorus that she would like to invite them to perform on February 27 at the 83rd annual Academy Awards, which she’s co-hosting with James Franco.

The elated kids began jumping up and down and screaming with delight.

After they eventually regained their composure, the kids treated Hathaway to a rousing rendition of “Jingle Bells.”

Producers have announced the first batch of presenters at the 83rd Annual Academy Awards.

Halle Berry, Jeff Bridges, Sandra Bullock, Marisa Tomei and Oprah will be among the big names handing out Oscars.

Bridges and Bullock were last year’s winners in the lead acting categories.

Anne Hathaway and James Franco will host the ceremony on February 27, 2011.

James Franco and Anne Hathaway will host the Academy Awards on February 27, 2011.

“James Franco and Anne Hathaway personify the next generation of Hollywood icons— fresh, exciting and multi-talented. We hope to create an Oscar broadcast that will both showcase their incredible talents and entertain the world on February 27,” Oscar producers Bruce Cohen and Don Mischer said in a statement.

“We are completely thrilled that James and Anne will be joining forces with our brilliant creative team to do just that.”

The 83rd Academy Awards will be broadcast live on ABC on February 27, 2011.

Last year, Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin co-hosted.

The legal battle between Demi Moore and Pacific Magazines – over pictures its Australian tab, New Idea, published of a private post-Oscars bash Moore threw in 2008 – has been settled.

Moore, who was seeking unspecified damages, claimed she had an agreement with an event organizer for the copyright of the pictures.

The playful snaps were reportedly a number of black-and-white photo booth-style pictures of Moore, her daughter Rumer Willis, Orlando Bloom, Cameron Diaz, Sean “Diddy” Combs, and Amanda De Cadenet.

The case was to begin Monday in Melbourne, Australia, but the judge said Moore and Pacific Magazines had reached a settlement.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Kevin Costner has become a dad for the seventh time.

Yesterday evening, the Academy Award-winner and his wife Christine Baumgartner welcomed a daughter, Grace Avery Costner.

Mother and daughter are doing well, according to Costner’s rep.

Grace joins siblings Hayes and Cayden (from Baumgartner), Liam (from ex-girlfriend Bridget Rooney), and Joe, Lily and Annie (from Costner’s first wife, Cindy Costner).

Undoubtedly, Costner is enjoying his lucky number 7.

Based on a false report in the British tab Grazia, a number of blogs began to speculate whether George Clooney and his girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis broke up.

The site Hollyscoop, which may be a misnomer, editorializes: “Are we surprised? Not really. George usually breaks up with his girls after award show season.”

According to Hollyscoop, Clooney “called off his 9-month relationship right after their Oscar appearance in March… Rumor on the block was that George dumped her because of Elisabetta’s partying ways.”

The blog further adds its (wrong) two cents, stating, “George has a one year time span with his women. We’re wondering if the ladies start getting nervous around the 6-month mark.”

And Gossip Cop is wondering why sites like Hollyscoop just make claims without fact-checking.

Through his spokesman, Clooney said, “Once again the story is made up, spread to other outlets and now denied. But don’t let facts get in the way of a good story. ”

“Heroes” star Hayden Panettiere and her world champion boxer boyfriend Wladimir Klitschko today traveled to the Japanese fishing town of Taiji to protest the annual slaughtering of thousands of dolphins - and they were not welcomed.

The “Heroes” star first tried to meet with Taiji’s mayor and union officials to discuss the practice, but was blocked at the door to the town hall.

Panettiere told reporters, “We are trying to peacefully come up with better ideas as to how to generate income and utilize the nature here.” She even offered that if Taiji stopped killing dolphins, “I’d love to be a spokesperson or to help generate tourism.”

Later, Panettiere walked along an area known as “The Cove,” where nets are set up to trap the dolphins, but two local officials quickly ran up to her group, words were exchanged, and the TV star and others left.

“We just wanted to have a very peaceful and relaxed conversation,” said Panettiere.

“The Cove” recently received a lot of attention when a film of the same name – about the yearly mammal killings – won the Oscar for best documentary.

This wasn’t the first time Panettiere protested in Taiji. Back in 2007, she paddled out into the hunting area with five other surfers. That encounter, featured in “The Cove,” also ended peacefully.

Just days after the shocking revelation that Jesse James allegedly cheated on his Oscar trophy-winning wife Sandra Bullock with inked-up mistress Michelle “Bombshell” McGee, TMZ is reporting that Bullock’s “reps have been in touch with several high-end divorce lawyers.”

According to the site, the “frontrunner” to represent Bullock is legal eagle Lance Spiegel, who has handled splits for Heather Locklear, Michael Jackson, and Charlie Sheen.

As for James, at this point his people have only reached out to attorneys to see if they might be willing to represent him should Bullock file for divorce, reports TMZ.

And while a permanent split may happen in the future, as of now Bullock’s camp has yet to approach divorce attorneys. In fact, a rep for Bullock tells Gossip Cop that TMZ’s report is “completely false.”
