Securing second place with $17.8 million was Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows, followed by third-place finisher Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked, with $13.3 million in ticket sales.

It looks like it’s going to be a big Christmas for Tom Cruise.

Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol is set to win the extended weekend box office with $45 million, according to early estimates.

That would place it ahead of other blockbusters like Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, both of which are expected to hit the $30 million mark.

But these projections are still very early.

Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows easily won the weekend box office, debuting with $40 million in ticket sales.

Robert Downey, Jr.’s detective film finished ahead of second place Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chip-Wrecked, with $23.5 million.

Despite a limited release, Tom Cruise’s spy movie, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, still nabbed third with $13.6 million.
