Nikki Reed was born as Nicole Houston Reed on May 17, 1988 in Los Angeles. Her parents divorced when she was 2 years old, and Reed left her mother’s home to live on her own when she was 14. She was in and out of high school, before ultimately earning her diploma through home schooling.
Reed’s foray into showbiz began at 14 when she collaborated with writer-director Catherine Hardwicke, a longtime family friend, on the script for “Thirteen,” based on her own teen experiences. She went on to star in the critically-acclaimed 2003 movie opposite Evan Rachel Wood, who was playing a semi-autobiographic version of Reed. In 2006, Reed had a recurring role on “The O.C,” and the following year, she appeared in Hardwicke’s film “Lords of Dogtown.”
In 2008, Reed re-teamed with Hardwicke yet again for “Twilight,” in which she played the vampire Rosalie. The actress went on to appear in all five of the franchise’s films, and formed a close friendship with co-star Jackson Rathbone. In 2011, Reed began dating singer Paul McDonald, not long after their first meeting was captured by “American Idol” cameras while he was a contestant on the FOX music competition. They wed later that year, and jointly embarked on a music career.
Reed and McDonald confirmed their separation in early 2014, though their divorce wasn’t finalized for nearly another year. During that time, she began dating Ian Somerhalder, to whom she is now engaged. Like Somerhalder, Reed is an activist who fights for animal rights.
