George Clooney

George Clooney was born on May 6, 1961 to Nina and Nick Clooney, a journalist. His aunt was the legendary singer-actress Rosemary Clooney. The future Oscar winner was raised in Kentucky and Ohio, and initially went to college to be a journalist like his father.

He went on to study acting at the Beverly Hills Playhouse, and scored roles on “The Facts of Life,” “Roseanne” and “Sisters.” Clooney’s breakout came in 1994 when he was cast on the medical drama “ER.” He remained with the show for five seasons as his fame steadily grew, earning two Emmy and three Golden Globe nominations.

Clooney was already making movies before leaving “ER,” starring in such films as “One Fine Day,” “The Peacemaker,” “Out of Sight,” and “Batman & Robin.” Following “ER,” Clooney focused exclusively on the big screen, with the 2000s bringing flicks like “The Perfect Storm,” “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” (for which he won a Golden Globe), and the “Ocean’s Eleven” films.

In 2005, Clooney appeared in “Syriana,” for which he won the Best Supporting Actor Oscar and a Golden Globe. That same year, he directed, produced, and starred in “Good Night, and Good Luck,” which earned him Best Director and Best Screenplay nominations at the same Academy Awards.

Clooney’s next Oscar nod came for 2007’s “Michael Clayton,” the same year he directed “Leatherheads.” More Oscar nominations followed for 2010’s “Up in the Air” and 2011’s “The Descendants,” the latter of which led to a Golden Globes win. He also received an Academy Award screenplay nomination for “The Ides of March.”

The star’s second Oscar win, however, finally came in 2013 when “Argo” won Best Picture. As producer, Clooney got to take home one of the statues. Later that year he starred opposite Sandra Bullock in the critically-acclaimed “Gravity,” and in 2014, he wrote, directed, and starred in the less well-received movie, “The Monuments Men.” In early 2015, he received the Cecil B. DeMille award at the Golden Globes for lifetime achievement.

Clooney has balanced his screen work with his passion for activism, and has frequently used his celebrity to raise awareness of certain causes, such as the crisis in Darfur and earthquake disaster relief in Haiti. His love life, however, has garnered even more interest. Following a short marriage to Talia Balsam from 1989 to 1993, Clooney dated (and eventually dumped) a string of beautiful women, earning him the title of Hollywood’s top bachelor.

But Clooney’s playboy lifestyle came to a screeching halt when he met Amal Alamuddin, a human rights lawyer, in 2013. They became engaged in early 2014, and had a star-studded wedding in Venice later that year.
