Susan Sarandon Calls Pope a “Nazi”
10:27 am, October 17th, 2011
Susan Sarandon slammed Pope Benedict XVI on Sunday during an interview at the Bay Street Theatre in the Hamptons, referring to the Catholic Bishop as a “Nazi.”
In a sitdown with actor Bob Balaban, Sarandon discussed her 1995 film Dead Man Walking, based on the anti-death-penalty book by Sister Helen Prejean, and noted that she had sent a copy of the book to Pope John Paul II, Benedict’s predecessor.
“The last [Pope],” she clarified, “not this Nazi one we have now.”
Balaban reportedly tried to pass over the remark, but Sarandon repeated the comment, according to Newsday.
The Pope’s PR team has in the past acknowledged that he was a member of the Hitler Youth as a child, a requirement for all German boys at the time, but insist he was not an active member of the group.
What do you think about Sarandon referring to the Pope as a Nazi?
