There’s a feud brewing between former “American Idol” judge Steven Tyler and new arrival Nicki Minaj.

In a new interview with MTV News, the Aerosmith frontman criticizes the lack of “camaraderie” among the new judges, suggesting that the reportedly tense atmosphere with Mariah Carey and Minaj will not be conducive to highlighting good new singers.

“They should have something going on so thick and beautiful that they can lay it over the new talent that’s trying to birth itself,” Tyler says of the judges.

He adds, “It needs to be birthed, not judged by ‘entertainment’ factors, it needs to be judged by people that [are] honest, true, that have the ‘It’ factor. Not the ‘It’ factor because they can fight. The f— is that all about?”

Tyler then expressed doubt that the new judges will be able to create the right atmosphere for emerging talent.

“These kids, they just got out of a car from the Midwest somewhere and they’re in New York City, they’re scared to death; you’re not going to get the best [out of them]. … If it was Bob Dylan, Nicki Minaj would have had him sent to the cornfield! Whereas, if it was Bob Dylan with us, we would have brought the best of him out, as we did with Phillip Phillips. Just saying.”

On Twitter, Minaj fired back.

“Steven Tyler said I would have sent Bob Dylan to a cornfield???” wrote the rapper. “Steven, you haven’t seen me judge one single solitary contestant yet!”

Minaj continued, “I understand you really wanted to keep your job but take that up with the producers. I haven’t done anything to you. That’s a racist comment.”

“You assume that I wouldn’t have liked Bob Dylan??? why? black? rapper? what? go f*ck yourself and worry about yourself babe,” added Minaj.

Later, she told her fans, “LOL lets make him a shirt that says “No Coloreds Allowed” then escort him down 2 Barbara Walters so he can tell how he was threatened w/guns,” referring to her spat with Walters over allegations that Minaj threatened Carey with a gun.

Minaj added, “When Steven 1st went on Idol he was ridiculed by his peers & fans alike. Called a sell out. So what does he do? Ridicule the next judge.”

It looks like “American Idol” just found itself a new controversy.

well,i know what rock means, and even if she likes it or not the old man can sing,it’s not racist, she tries to defend herself…she’s a sellout….good generation ahead

  • Regina1180

Holy crap Minaj, his comment had NOTHING to do with race. It had to do with the fact that you were asked to be on the show because you’re “hot” right now and may not know good music and good performers, aka Bob Dylan.

  • name

Why do black people turn everything into racism? Why so aggressive? Can’t we just give a comment without turning it into skin color. Hoped she would be mature but to bad, …

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1663484158 Phalen Shearouse

it seems like if you say anything bad about a famous black person, your racist. what did he say that was exactly racist? i’ve never really watched idol but it seems this season has been more about the fighting between the two judges then the contestants.

  • JMHO4

Idol hasn’t been the same since Simon left….just one more year I will pass on watching….you judge what you like (human nature), I don’t care for Minaj or Carey so I’m sure I would not agree with their choices……..

  • Regina1180

She’s not smart enough to know exactly what he meant by his comments, so she pulls the race card. This is part of the reason why I couldn’t be a publicist today. Celebs never said anything without directions from a publicist, but with Twitter they are free to show how dumb they really are. I’m glad I made the career change.

  • Kyle4

I don’t see how that comment was racist, it was more along the lines of “She doesn’t know anything about good music.” The same could be said for other pop acts like Kesha.

  • Rene

Some black people play the race card, not all. All races have their aggressive people but black women especially have been often stereotyped this way. I don’t expect maturity from Nicki after seeing how she seemed to fall off the handle. One good (and funny) snarky comment would’ve been fine to get her message across.

  • joe

send them all to the corn field

  • Eileen

Wasn’t there a Twilight Zone episode about that?

  • http://twitter.com/kylew1973 Kiwi73

Honestly, let’s not keep playing the race card. There was nothing racist about what he said. The color of your skin has nothing to do with the nonsense that escapes your mouth in order to garner more press. Your lack of talent also has nothing to do with the color of your skin. Your pink hair and ugly make-up, well yeah that does have to do with the color of your skin, because it clashes. Get a stylist. Was that racist because I recognize the differences in skin tone? I am not blind, I can see that you have pigment to your skin. Should I ignore it, never mention it, for fear of being racist? It is such a shame that people can’t get past it, and a worse shame that it’s used an excuse in instances where it doesn’t exist.

  • Nick

He is making an assumption based on her musical roots, rap and hip hop, that she doesn’t understand or value other types of music. Hip hop and rap are associated with urban and African American demographics primarily–his assumption about her is based not on first hand knowledge but on appearances, so why shouldn’t she question if the assumption was made on race, on skin…it’s part of her appearance. Racism still exists, and it’s even worse when it’s in these subtle, ambiguous ways because it’s not obvious and easy to call out with certainty. Not always going to be right about it, but I see where she’s coming from.

  • bboyblue

there are a lot of white racist people and bigots in America and some say things out their
mouths that will offend blacks, but I’m black and i don’t that feel he made a
racist comment… he just saying that she is not talented enough to judge upcoming
real talent… and i agree… she is only on the show because of her popularity
not because she has real talent…

  • joe

    Yes great one

  • jenver

OMG! One of the best episodes ever!
“Wish them to the corn fields Anthony…”

    Great comment Joe!!!

  • MissZee

i do not see anything remotely racist coming from Steven Tyler

  • Be Wobbly Bo

Nice try! It wasn’t based on her musical roots, rap and hip hop. it was based on the fact that as a rap or hip hop artist she lacks real talent compared to many others, and because she has no real knowledge of true talent, as a person, no matter what her skin color, ethnicity or musical roots. Plain truth is, Nicki Minaj is always spoiling for some kind of fight and acting all tough, neither of which qualifies her as a judge of talent outside the boxing ring or MMA arena, and probably not there either. Tyler’s assumption is based on the lack of experience and total lack of self-control over her anger, which permeates her persona and nothing else.

  • http://twitter.com/dejahsenters dejah♥senters

That wasn’t racist. He simply heard the music she puts out and made an assumption. Nothing to do with your skin color. Get over yourself, Nicki.

  • Nick

I disagree, but there you go…it’s all assumption unless the actual words that represent my opinion fall out of his mouth. I still see where Nicki’s coming from, and honestly if “Talent” was something that was black or white rather than something subjective we wouldn’t need more than one judge or any judges at all. He and you apparently might not think Nicki has no talent but a lot of people think otherwise, including me.

  • WelweteenWabbit

what a troll she is. Nothing he said was racist. If anything it was racist of HER to take what he said and twist it around like that. She’s horrifically non-talented and disgusting (yes, I’ve seen the clips of her on stage with a giant dildo… classy) and wouldn’t know talent if it walked up and kicked her in the face.

  • Jimmy

Man it makes me sick that at ever turn this no talent hack pulls out the race card she always gotta put in there somewhere little black rapper girl lady no one gives a rats ass what you are or if you were purple your a terriable artest who needs to get a life i wonder what your gunna say when your carrer is in the toliet

  • I’m so confused, Nicki

This so confuses this old woman, especially since these are 2 of my favorite performers…

  • hneftafl

He should have said Jimi Hendrix instead of Bob Dylan. Then, she’d have been like “uh…..uh…..”.

  • Tracy Isham

they need to get this woman OFF the show and NOW!! she is nothing but trash and a sh*t starter. listen to her music?? did you really think you were getting a class act here producers?? N. Minaj, fyi. YOU ARE NOTHING compared to a legend like Steven Tyler and never will be.

  • http://www.facebook.com/alfalambda Aura Lyris

That woman is crazy. Knew it from the start. She’s no fashion/music icon. She’s not even a decent role model to no one. And, dude, who chose her as a judge?! Please fire that person N-O-W.

  • Love never fails

I’ll say…get the Ghetto trash out…what can that cow teach anyone?..How to be a lowlife ghetto horse?

  • forshameforshame

“It was based on the fact that as a rap or hip hop artist she lacks real talent compared to many others”

This is the most telling part of all you wrote. Why is it that YOU believe that rap or hip hop artists lack real talent compared to many others? It is okay to not be into a particular genre of music but to say that because an artist creates music in the genre you don’t like they are lacking in real talent is a bit much. “Talent” is subjective. We all have different tastes in……everything. I happen to enjoy some of her music as well as Aerosmith, more hip hop and rap artists, R&B artists, back in the 90s I was REALLY into dance and alternative. So again it’s subjective. I can’t and won’t say one genre or one artist is above or below another because I appreciate them all for what they are.

  • forshameforshame

Like she said we haven’t seen her judge. We haven’t seen any of the judges for that matter. Why? Well because the show hasn’t aired yet. He made an unfair assumption about her musical tastes. Never judge a book by its cover. Just because she creates music in a particular genre doesn’t mean she can’t or doesn’t appreciate a range of different music and artists. I know for me my taste ranges from “boyband music” to 90s dance/house to alternative to hip hop and rap to R&B and everything in between. So let’s see the show first before we judge her judging skills. Sidenote: All the other drama with her and Mariah was not one sided though it appeared to be. The way that played out was unfair. Mariah is no victim and it takes two to tango and I have a sneaking suspicion that Carey knows that dance quite well.

  • guest

pretty sure he meant that she has no talent compared to other rap or hip hop artists that do?

  • amelia

    this comment is racist.

  • amelia

    exactly.

  • forshameforshame

I don’t know that it’s a “pretty sure” as for as what he or she meant but it’s possible.

  • Dana

Like Little Kim, but with no talent. Yeah, he’s racist… sure. He said “we” would have put someone like Dylan through which means he’s talking about his other judges, who are Black and Latin respectively. I bet you he heard her trash talking and just rolled her eyes. Like she can even compare to someone like Steven Tyler. Talentless hack. I get Maria Carey, but with Minaj.. they were truly just shooting from the bottom of the barrel,

  • T.I.T.L.

you are as dumb as this trash is

  • Martina

Can anybody tell me why does this little zero mentioning racism?! You just embarrassed yourself you idiot. This is the reason people are tired or “racist” remarks, cos idiot like her bring that up anytime they like and anytime they have lost their argument. You are stupid, low and useless waste of space N.Minaj.

  • Martina

    Exactly! Finally someone!

  • Martina

    Huh?

  • tintung tain

    Yeah dude. You’re correct.

  • Fiddlesticks

It wasn’t racist, he’s just saying you and Mariah are stupid, which is true.

  • Jojojet

Let me just go out on limb here and say this but I don’t know many black people who has heard of Bob Dylan. and Before you get all up in arms I am a black woman who knows this from experience when I did a project on folk and no one knew anything about any of the artists I spoke about. I agree with him that if Bob Dylan walked into AI he would have gotten an no not just from her but from most judges because he is not what you would call a traditonally good singer.

  • hatemanaj

Niki manaj is a talentless hack.

  • hatemanaj

niki minaj is a talentless hack AND a bully who attacks idol performers for no particular reason other than (a)she is a talentless hack (b) sHE IS A TALENTLESS HACK WITH LITTLE TALENT!
