Steve Harvey defended his decision to meet with Donald Trump on Friday after receiving a ton of negative backlash on social media for sitting down with the president-elect. The comedian and TV personality took to Twitter to express his belief that Trump “genuinely wants to make a difference.”

The “Family Feud” host visited Trump Tower on Friday afternoon to discuss inner city issues with the president-elect. But after Twitter erupted with comments both mocking Harvey and admonishing him for consulting with Trump, he tweeted a statement explaining his point of view. “Our president (Obama) asked that all of us sit down and talk to one another in order to move our country forward… the transition teams on both sides asked me to meet and I’m glad I did,” Harvey noted.

He continued, “I found him in our meeting both congenial and sincere. Trump wants to help with situations in the inner cities so he immediately got Dr. Ben Carson on the phone to put us together to begin dialogue in looking at programs and housing to help our inner cities and he’s very open to my mentoring efforts across the country.” Harvey added, “I walked away feeling like I had just talked with a man who genuinely wants to make a difference in this area. I feel that something really great could come out of this… I would sit with him anytime.”

As for examples of the negative backlash that Harvey was responding to, there was one Twitter user with the handle ‏@tdouble2k who expressed, “Wow @IAmSteveHarvey I know you don’t know me or even care but many of us are disappointed today. Sad day reading about your visit.” “‏You want black people to thrive, you want black people to be recognized, but when a black person takes that step you vilify em. #steveharvey,” objected @youngblackcon. Account holder ‏@ms_e_laine tweeted, “I’m surprised @IAmSteveHarvey wld be willing 2 tarnish his brand by linking up w a racist pervert. Can still support inner cities w/o Trump.” And referencing an inappropriate remark the comedian recently made about Asian men, singer Josh Groban cracked, “Steve Harvey makes racist joke and is immediately invited to Trump Tower.”
