Stephen Collins Plays Pedophile Priest In Short Film
Stephen Collins plays a pedophile priest in a short film called Penance that’s currently on the festival circuit — a creepy and unsettling coincidence given the shocking news that Collins molested young girls in real life.
In the project, which was made in 2013, the actor portrays a much different kind of church leader than the one he played on “7th Heaven.” Collins’ character is visited by a man “hounded by personal demons and inner turmoil,” whose meeting with the priest leads him to “discover exactly what it means to find forgiveness… or to give it.”
Collins talked about Penance during an interview earlier this year (see below), calling it “intense” and a “powerful piece.”
Director Jeff Wolfe tells People, “When I cast Stephen Collins, I had no idea there might be a connection between his real life and the part I asked him to play. I found the recent allegations particularly shocking, as my film is meant to speak to victims of abuse and the idea that the effects of abuse never really go away.”
