Stars Slam Donald Trump For John McCain War Hero Comments
Donald Trump is in yet another controversy, this time for remarks he made about John McCain‘s war record. And now celebrities are once again weighing in on the latest misstep in his presidential campaign.
Appearing at the Family Leader Summit in Iowa with 2016 GOP hopefuls on Saturday, Trump was asked about McCain, whom he recently described as a “dummy.” McCain, of course, ran for president in 2008, losing to President Obama. He’s had a storied political career that began after he survived being a prisoner of war during Vietnam when his plane was shot down.
And that to Trump is exactly the problem. He said during the event, McCain “is a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.” The attack on one of the nation’s most revered veterans quickly sparked a backlash, and Trump attempted to clarify on social media. “Captured or not, all our soldiers are heroes,” he tweeted.
But he also continued to criticize McCain, writing on Twitter, “In addition to doing a lousy job in taking care of our Vets, John McCain let us down by losing to Barack Obama in his run for President!” Trump further wrote on Facebook, “I am not a fan of John McCain because he has done so little for our Veterans and he should know better than anybody what the Veterans need, especially in regards to the VA. He is yet another all talk, no action politician who spends too much time on television and not enough time doing his job and helping the Vets.”
Many are blasting Trump for both the original remark and his refusal to apologize. Those slamming the mogul include not just his Republican opponents, but also a number of stars throughout Hollywood. “Trump, who never served, making fun of McCain because he was captured is beyond stupid. This guy is a serious idiot,” tweeted Albert Brooks.
Penn Jillette, who was also recently trashed by Trump, wrote on Twitter, “Now Trump is attacking war heroes. He should have stuck with attacking carny trash like me. At least that’s safe.” “Modern Family” executive producer Danny Zuker, who has been one of the most vocal anti-Trump celebrities, tweeted directly to him, “.@realDonaldTrump Anyone who survives the degradation of years of captivity is a hero in my book. I don’t know how Ivana Trump did it.”
He was, of course, referring to Trump’s first wife. Meanwhile, Comedian Andy Lassner, who is also an “Ellen DeGeneres Show” executive producer, posted, “Since I’m blocked can someone please forward a message to @realDonaldTrump for me? Thx.” The message? “Donald- You’re a piece of sh*t. Best, Andy Lassner.”
McCain’s daughter Meghan McCain tweeted, “I have a brother that just returned from Afghanistan a month ago, glad he can come home to this being said about his father and his service.” And Montel Williams, who is a veteran himself, blasted Trump on Twitter and Facebook, saying, “Enough! Whether you like John McCain’s politics or not, for Donald Trump to mock him for getting captured and held POW (where he was brutally tortured) is INEXCUSABLE.”
“John McCain earned the title of American hero. Doesn’t mean he’s always right on policy, but it means his service is owed a special level of respect PERIOD,” continued Williams. The former talk show host was so angry, he also posted a reaction video (see below).
In response to Trump’s comment about failing to win the presidency, Samantha Ronson mocked, “I just laughed out loud. HOW DARE HE LOSE!” “Bachelor” producer Elan Gale cracked, “I actually think Trump is Sacha Baron Cohen’s best character in years.” And Justin Guarini, who lost the inaugural season of “American Idol” to Kelly Clarkson, joked, “Got a DM from Trump this morning. He only likes Idols that win.” Tell us what YOU think in the comments below.
