Stars Nominated For Tonys, But Jennifer Hudson Snubbed By Tony Awards
There’s plenty of stars nominated for the 2016 Tonys, but Jennifer Hudson was shockingly snubbed.
As Gossip Cop reported, the nominations for the 70th annual Tony Awards were announced on Tuesday morning. Oscar winner Lupito Nyong’o scored a nod, as did Oscar nominee Michelle Williams. Other Hollywood faces on the list include Jessica Lange, Meagan Hilty, Jane Krawkoski, Danielle Brooks, and Laurie Metcalf. Among men, Jeff Daniels, Frank Langella, Gabriel Byrne, Michael Shannon and Zachary Levi all received nominations.
But where is Hudson’s recognition for The Color Purple? The singer-actress is already halfway to an EGOT as a Grammy and Oscar winner. But her widely-expected Tony nomination did not come this morning.
Perhaps adding insult to injury, the cast of The Color Purple was on the “Today” show at the same time as the Tony nominations. Together they performed the musical’s title song, and celebrated a nomination for Best Revival of a Musical. But it was co-star Cynthia Erivo who got to bask in the glory of an individual nod, and Brooks had the aforementioned nomination, too.
The two are up for Best Leading Actress in a Musical and Best Featured Actress in a Musical, respectively. Gossip Cop has no doubt Hudson, who attended Monday’s Met Gala, is thrilled for her colleagues and her show as a whole. But we’re just a little disappointed on her behalf. Check out the “Today” video below.
UPDATE: A few hours after the nominations were announced, a humble Hudson posted on Instagram, “Very proud and overwhelmed to say congrats to @cynthiaerivo @daniebb3 @color purple entire cast on tony nod! One hell of a cast that’s for sure Proud of u all!”
UPDATE 2: Despite the aforementioned well-wishes, Hudson allegedly threw some shade in a since-deleted tweet. When a follower pointed out her snub, the star is said to have responded, “My presence was used for my celebrity, not my talent. I’m not surprised.” While that tweet no longer appears on Hudson’s feed, another one written to the same user, saying “Thank u anyway,” remains.
