The UN General Assembly launched Nelson Mandela International Day on July 18, 2009 in honor of his birthday. But the day is more than just a commemoration of the life of the late South African president and anti-apartheid revolutionary. Mandela Day is also a global movement to honor his legacy by continuing his work changing the world for the better.
Forest Whitaker tweeted, “When the world is besieged by violence, #Mandeladay reminds us that peace begins in our hearts and minds.” South African native Charlize Theron noted that the holiday coincides with the country’s International Aids conference, writing, “Today is #MandelaDay and it seems appropriate as we open #AIDS2016 in South Africa, that we honor his legacy on AIDS.”
Zendaya expressed, “Do something positive one act of kindness, one helpful hand could change a life.” She also posted a photo of herself visiting a children’s hospital in South Africa on Mandela Day last year. Meanwhile, Alyssa Milano quoted Mandela by writing, “‘It always seems impossible until it’s done.’ #MandelaDay,” and Viola Davis also cited the same quote, adding, “Happy #MandelaDay!”
Along with a photo of Mandela, Reverend Jesse Jackson wrote, “Your suffering and sacrifice were not in vain. Your life reproduced life. Thank you.” MC Hammer simply said, “SALUTE #MandelaDay,” and Mandela’s wife, Winnie Mandela, urged everyone to “start thinking about what your gift of service is and act on it.”
Sean “Diddy” Combs posted a photo of himself meeting Mandela, and captioned it, “When I shook his hand I could feel his incredible spirit through my body!! #GodBless.” Alicia Keys said, “Love is the most powerful weapon “#HappyBirthdayMadiba.” And Paul McCartney expressed, “Remembering Nelson Mandela.” Gossip Cop will update as more stars celebrate Mandela Day.
