“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” Wins Weekend Box Office By Galaxies + Top 10!
The force is stronger than ever with Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which opened to a record-breaking $238 million this weekend and broke several other all-time box office records in the process, as Gossip Cop reported.
At $238 million, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has the largest box office opening of all time, beating this summer’s Jurassic World. With Thursday night showings, the highly-anticipated movie outgrossed record-holder Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part Two, and then did so again on Friday, toppling the record for the highest opening day with $120.5 million. Star Wars: The Force Awakens also shattered a number of IMAX sales records.
Of course, with Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ humongous debut, the grosses for the rest of the Top 10 looked pathetically puny in comparison. Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Road Chip finished in second place with $14.4 million, while Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s new comedy Sisters had to settle for third at $13.4 million.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 and Creed took fourth and fifth places with $5.7 million and $5.1 million, respectively. Rounding out the Top 10 were The Good Dinosaur in sixth with $4.2 million, while Krampus secured a seventh place finish with $3.8 million. In The Heart Of The Sea took eighth with $3.5 million, and Dilwale nabbed ninth with $1.9 million. Just making the Top 10 was Bajirao Mastani ticket sales at $1.7 million.
