Gossip Cop Busted More Than 85 Rumors In October: Which Were The Worst?
It’s officially well into Fall, which seems appropriate as the tabloids fell to new depths in October. Gossip Cop debunked more than 85 rumors, and Star magazine was our worst offender of the month, with a whopping 24 stories corrected.
That includes false pieces claiming Julia Roberts was getting divorced, Kris Jenner was Selena Gomez’s new manager, and Taylor Swift was upset about a non-existent dinner between Harry Styles and Katy Perry. Star even shamefully alleged Khloe Kardashian was on a “deadly” diet that could kill her. But Star’s most egregious ethical lapse was a cover story declaring Ashton Kutcher was just “caught in bed with another woman” behind Mila Kunis’ back (see cover right). In actuality, the tab was just grossly misleading its readers, attempting to trick people into thinking Kutcher was cheating on his fiancée when the publication was really only regurgitating rumors of a supposed fling from two years ago, before he and Kunis were ever a couple.
OK! was nearly as bad, with 23 articles busted. The mag wrongly alleged Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux had secretly wed, Jessica Simpson was getting a breast reduction, and Jennifer Lopez was reuniting with Casper Smart. The magazine even claimed Jennifer Lawrence was pregnant with Chris Martin’s baby and had moved into his home… and, uh, they’re not even together anymore. And just last week, Gossip Cop called OK! out for a made-up cover story claiming Lindsay Lohan and Tom Cruise were secretly “hooking up.” Disregarding the entire point of fact-checking, the outlet chose to publish its article even after Lohan’s camp told them it was false.
And HollywoodLife, coming in third place on our scorecard, continued to prove its nothing more than a traffic-hungry, accuracy-challenge webloid. Gossip Cop had to clean up the site’s messes 16 times, more than some of the print tabloids.
