SpongeBob Movie Takes Down American Sniper To Win Box Office
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water ended American Sniper’s reign atop the box office. The children’s movie earned $56 million for the weekend, soaring over the Clint Eastwood war drama, which has dominated movie theaters for weeks. American Sniper took in about $24.2 million as it pulls closer to $300 million overall.
Meanwhile, the Mila Kunis-Channing Tatum space adventure Jupiter Ascending opened in third place with $19 million. That put it ahead of another new movie, Seventh Son, which brought in $7.1 million for the #4 spot.
It was a close race for fifth place between Project Almanac and Paddington. But the British bear adventure edged out the teen sci-fi thriller, earning $5.4 million compared to $5.3 million. There was also a very tight fight for seventh place. The Imitation Game won the battle with $4.9 million, narrowly topping the $4.8 million The Wedding Ringer received.
Rounding out the Top 10 were the Kevin Costner-Octavia Spencer family drama Black or White ($4.5 million) and the steamy Jennifer Lopez thriller The Boy Next Door ($4.1 million). Missing the cut were former Top 10 movies Taken 3 (11th place) and Selma (12th place) What did you see this weekend?
