“Split” Wins Box Office

Split is the latest thriller from M. Night Shyamalan, who wrote both the script and directed the project. The film stars James McAvoy as a man with dissociative identity disorder, giving him multiple personalities. Gossip Cop won’t give away any of the twists, but suffice it to say, the movie is this weekend’s big draw.
Split easily took the number one spot with $40.2 million. The weekend’s other big opening was Vin Diesel’s xXx: The Return Xander Cage. It secured a distant second place with only $20 million. Hidden Figures, fresh off its meaningful box office victories, slipped down to third with $16.3 million. The animated family flick Sing landed in fourth with $9 million. And the musical La La Land had a fifth-place finish with a total of $8.4 million in ticket sales.
Rounding out the Top 10 were Rogue One: A Star Wars Story in the number six spot with $7.04 million, followed closely by seventh place finisher Monster Trucks with $7 million. Patriots Day nabbed eighth with $6 million, while The Founder secured ninth with $3.8 million. Just making it into the last slot was Sleepless. The movie earned $3.7 million.
