“Split” Wins Box Office For Third Weekend
Split has won the box office for the third weekend in a row, despite a new thriller’s attempt to divide moviegoers. Get the details, and check out the full Top 10 below.
As Gossip Cop has reported, M. Night Shyamalan’s latest twisty tale stars James McAvoy as a man having a deadly struggle with his more than 20 different personalities. The film has dominated the box office since its opening last month, and once again led the pack even as its weekly haul shrank. This time around, Split stayed atop of its throne with $14.6 million.
That was more than enough to keep Rings at bay. The new horror flick, the third in the Ring franchise, was expected to attract some of the Split audience. Instead, it opened with a relatively paltry $13 million. Still, on this quiet weekend, that helped snag Rings a second-place debut.
In third was A Dog’s Purpose. It took in $10.8 million. Meanwhile, Hidden Figures, earned fourth place and $10.1 million a week after its big win at the SAG Awards. And Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone’s La La Land sang and danced its way to the fifth position with $7.45 million.
Rounding out the Top 10 were Resident Evil: The Final Chapter in sixth, with receipts totaling $4.5 million. Finishing in seventh was Sing, with $4 million. Nabbing eighth was Lion with $3.9 million, while The Space Between secured ninth with $3.8. And just making it into the last spot was xXx: The Return Of Xander Cage. The film earned $3.7 million.
