WATCH: Spirit Awards 2015 Opening Video Is Hilarious Birdman Spoof With Fred Armisen, Kristen Bell & Miles Teller
Done as a long tracking shot in the style of the critically acclaimed movie, the parody shows Armisen levitating backstage (like Michael Keaton’s Birdman character) and arguing with a cynical Bell (coming off like Emma Stone’s character). Adam Scott shows up as a frantic producer, while Armisen’s old “Saturday Night Live” pal Bill Hader portrays director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.
The best part, though, might be a crossover with Whiplash. That movie’s star, Miles Teller, is discovered to be the source of the drumming that happens through Birdman, and when Armisen tries to intimidate him (like J.K. Simmons does in his Oscar-nominated Whiplash role), Teller smacks him in the face. So does Bell. There’s a lot of slapping going on.
The spoof also takes a couple of funny jabs at the Spirit Awards themselves, which Bell makes fun of for happening in a “circus tent” in the middle of the day. Gossip Cop will have full coverage of the winners from the Spirit Awards on Saturday, as well as the Oscars on Sunday. Stay tuned! In the meantime, watch the opening video from the Spirit Awards below!
