‘SNL’ Mocks No Black Oscar Nominations With All White Screen Guild Awards – WATCH VIDEO
“Saturday Night Live” mocked how no black actors were nominated for Oscars with a sketch about the fictitious Screen Guild Awards, where not one person up for an award was black, even though many of the films were about African-Americans. Watch the “SNL” video below.
In the bit, we see the white nominees in film scenes with black actors, who have been nominated for simply being on-camera for a moment or two. In one movie about an African warlord who has an army of young, back children, a guy is nominated (and wins) for being “white man with camera.” In another film, a white guy is up for a best actor award for just being heard over the phone. In the end, all five white nominees win Screen Guild Awards.
The sketch, of course, is in response as Gossip Cop has reported, to the lack of diversity at the Oscars. A number of stars, including including Spike Lee, Snoop Dogg, and Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, are outwardly boycotting the Academy Awards because of its lack of diversity. Meanwhile, many other stars such as George Clooney, Whoopi Goldberg, and Mark Ruffalo have similarly expressed their disappointment with the Academy Awards for not recognizing the achievements of more black actors.
And, as Gossip Cop noted on Friday, the board of governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is making changes to help the Academy Awards become more diverse moving forward. The Oscars’ governing body unanimously approved policies to double the number of women and minorities in the Academy by 2020.
