Simon Cowell Opens Up About Zayn Malik And One Direction’s Future (VIDEO)
Simon Cowell was a guest on Thursday’s “Late Late Show with James Corden” and opened up about Zayn Malik quitting One Direction, as well as the group’s future. Cowell acknowledged Malik had been “stressed” for some time, and that he had to “respect his decision,” but ultimately thinks the remaining members of One Direction are set to release their “best” album ever. See the video below.
Corden kicked off the talk about Malik by asking Cowell where he was when band member decided to leave One Direction. “About to jump off a cliff,” deadpanned the music mogul. Cowell then said more seriously, “I was in Miami. I kind of knew this was coming,” noting, “We had a few conversations. He wasn’t happy. I was trying to say to him, ‘Look, I think you should stay around a bit a little longer’… And then something in him just said, ‘I’ve had enough.'”
Cowell explained at that point their was really no convincing Malik to stay. “Once someone’s made their mind up, they’re going to go,” he said, adding, “He was a bit stressed, and he needed some time off. So, I had to respect his decision.”
Cowell said Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, and Louis Tomlinson were “shocked” by Malik’s decision, but still had to perform shows in Asia, and ended up being “incredible” and “amazing” in concert. And not only that, but Cowell’s convinced their next album, which they’ll complete this year, will be “the best record they’ve ever made.” Watch the video below of Cowell discussing Malik leaving One Direction, and tell us what you think.
