Sid Caesar, the comedy icon whose TV shows helped define the medium in the 1950s, has died.

He was 91.

His death was announced on Wednesday.

Caesar starred on “Your Show of Shows” and “Caesar’s Hour,” groundbreaking live broadcasts that helped introduce talents like Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Neil Simon, Larry Gelbart and Woody Allen into American pop culture.

The series revolved around sketches rather than vaudeville, ushering in a new broadcast era.

He later appeared in movies like It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World; Silent Movie; and Grease.
