BOX OFFICEUPDATE – 5/23/2010
According to updated estimates, Shrek Forever After 3D will breeze to a $72 million weekend opening and first place at the box office.
The other major release, action spoof MacGruber, looks to have bombed with just $4.1 million in receipts.
Iron Man 2 ($26 million) stayed in front of the more recent Robin Hood ($18.5 million) for the #2 spot, while holdovers Letters to Juliet ($9 million) and Just Wright ($4.3 million) appear to have claimed fourth and fifth place ahead of MacGruber.
Figures are still not final.

Once again, Shrek has left the competition green with envy.
The animated ogre’s fourth film, Shrek Forever After 3D, will win the weekend box office with ease, according to projections.
An estimated $20 million Friday puts Shrek on pace for a $70 million three-day take, far ahead of heroic holdovers Iron Man 2 (est. $27 million) and Robin Hood (est. $17 million).
“Saturday Night Live” export MacGruber opened more weakly, and is expected to finish at #5 with about $5 million.
Letters to Juliet, featuring Amanda Seyfried, tracks to a $9.5 million fourth place.
As always, these are just (very early) estimates, with more accurate figures emerging over the weekend.
