Sherri Shepherd Tearfully Addresses The View Departure — WATCH VIDEO!

Truth rating: 10

“The View” returned from its holiday hiatus on Monday, giving Sherri Shepherd and Jenny McCarthy their first chance to address their upcoming departures from the show. Or, as Whoopi Goldberg put it, the “giant, neon pink gorilla in the room.”

McCarthy took the lead by saying that the reports of their exits were “not true,” sending the audience into rapturous applause — until she made clear she was just joking. The newest co-host went on to say that “after much consideration, I’ve taken a new job, that will allow me to do what I do best, which is talk without having to interrupt anyone.” McCarthy didn’t reveal what the gig is, but hinted that it may compete with “The View.”

Shepherd was far more emotional, confessing that behind-the-scenes, it was “known since the spring that I did not intend to return to the show once my contract ended in August.” “I didn’t discuss anything publicly, anything in my personal life, because I didn’t want to do anything to distract from Barbara Walters and our celebration of her retirement in May,” explained the actress-comedienne.

Shepherd, who has been on the morning chatfest for seven years, cried as she thanked her past and present colleagues, and even snuck in a Bill Clinton hooker joke. A source told Gossip Cop last month that Shepherd’s “View” exit follows failed contract negotiations, while McCarthy was let go after just one season as the show moves “in an exciting new direction.”
