Shawn Mendes Slams Billboard For “Fans Don’t Know Him” Misquote
Shawn Mendes slammed his own Billboard cover story on Thursday after the magazine sold it as an article about “how his fans don’t truly know him.” The singer insisted on Twitter he was misquoted and never expressed that point of view.
Mendes’ Billboard story claims “his most dangerous relationship” may be with his fans, quoting the musician as saying, “You’re one person. You can’t let them take everything from you. Because they will – not in a malicious way. They just love you. You have to be careful.” Mendes also goes on to say during his interview, “People know me but they have no idea.”
But after the magazine published the article using the tagline, “Shawn Mendes on how his fans don’t truly know him,” the singer insisted in a series of tweets that his words were either misunderstood or taken out of context. “I have no idea why they would say that. I did not say that!!!” he wrote. “I explained how im growing up and so are you guys and how it takes time for you all to fully understand me and me to understand you.”
The singer added, “Its really unfortunate when what you say gets turned into the bad version of it. Im sorry guys.” Mendes even went on to accuse the magazine of cutting out a key portion of his interview, writing, “and the part that i spoke about how much my fans mean to me and what i owe them is not even touched on.” Mendes concluded, “Again, im sorry. Very frustrated.”
