Seth Rogen revealed on Monday’s “Howard Stern Show” that his new R-rated animated movie, Sausage Party, originally earned an NC-17 rating thanks to a scene depicting a food orgy. Listen to audio from the interview below!

Rogen plays a talking hot dog in the raunchy adult cartoon, which was so shocking to the MPAA ratings board, it at first decided an R-rating was too lenient. “I wish I could have been there because I imagine a very heated debate did occur,” Rogen told Stern about the process of rating the movie.

Rogen explained on the radio show, “There is a very sexually charged scene in the film… We at first got an NC-17 rating back, and then our fear was it would create this big negotiation process where we ultimately had to butcher the thing.” But luckily for those looking forward to the food-on-food sex scene, Rogen assured, “In the end, we changed so microscopically little.”

The actor went on to reveal one notable alteration made, which involved “digitally removing the hair from a pita bread’s ball sack.” Rogen further admitted that the filmmakers “made [the scene] way dirtier then we even hoped it would be” as a negotiating tactic. “You don’t want an NC-17,” he noted. “The rules when it comes to advertising your movie become greatly more restrictive.”

“It’s like a kiss of death,” Rogen added about the dreaded rating. “There’s a stigma to it.” However, the actor admitted to having “been a part of several movies that have first gotten an NC-17 rating,” one of which was Superbad, so the MPAA’s initial reaction to Sausage Party didn’t come as a shock.
