Selena Gomez Gives Taylor Swift Shoutout In Emotional We Day Speech About Haters And Forgiveness — WATCH VIDEO!
Selena Gomez gave a passionate and emotional speech at We Day Vancouver on Wednesday. The youth empowerment event, sponsored by Free the Children, occurs in cities across the globe to reward and inspire kids as they grow up to be tomorrow’s leaders.
Gomez previously participated in a We Day event in California earlier this year. As Gossip Cop reported at the time, the singer-actress opened up about the mistakes she’s made in her life, and what she’s learned from them.
In her speech at Wednesday’s event, Gomez focused on judgment and forgiveness, and tied it to the rise in social media bullying. She told the crowd, “When people look at me, they don’t see a 22-year-old figuring it out as she goes. They see what they want to see.”
“I know what it’s like to be judged and to be put down. I know what it’s like to have other people have opinions of you without knowing you,” said Gomez. She confessed, though, that if she let that get to her, “it would drive me crazy.”
“I want to say you are not defined by an Instagram photo, by a like , by a comment. That does not define you,” Gomez stressed as cheers rose from the audience. “I want you guys to know that the trick is to focus on the love.”
Gomez told the attendees, “What I want you guys to do is, every rude comment, every person that tries to hurt you personally or though the Internet, I want you to forgive them. Just forgive them.”
“There is so much love in this world, and in this stadium. Do not limit yourself because of what others expect,” said the star. “We all deserve more than we think, and in the end, nobody remembers those haters, the comments. Nobody remembers them. They’re just background noise.”
Gomez admitted that it’s a lesson she herself is “still trying to learn.” She went on to say, “Like my friend Taylor [Swift] says, the haters are gonna hate. Just shake it off.”
Gomez served as the day’s host. Nick Jonas, Orlando Bloom, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis were also among the celebrity guests. Note: Video no longer available.
