Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez Brought Into Congress Debate Over Immigration (VIDEO)

VIDEO

(C-SPAN)

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez made an unexpected “appearance” on Wednesday — on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives during debate over Arizona’s controversial immigration law.

Seriously.

VIDEO BELOW

The pair were used by Congressman Luis Gutierrez to highlight the inherent difficulty Arizona law enforcement officials face in trying to determine — based only on sight — who is and is not American.

To illustrate the shortcomings of such profiling, Rep. Gutierrez used five side-by-side comparisons in which the individual you’d assume is American is not.

Gomez is from Texas, while Bieber is, of course, from Canada — a distinction Gutierrez argues might not be so obvious to the untrained eye.

Check out video below!

The Bieber/Gomez portion begins around the 2:20 mark.

LOL! That is too funny. Gomez is the American and Bieber is not…but according to the AZ law Gomez would be profiled.

  • Krissu

I support AZ law. And I don’t think it’s just based on looks who will be asked to show identification. I think main thing will be accent and how easy you understand/speak English.

  • aquarius64

Accent should not be taken into account either. And somebody came be in the US illegally even if he/she can speak English fluently. Agree with Chloe, Gomez would have been stopped in AZ by a cop who’s not up on Hollywood b/c of her brown skin.

  • canmva

You do realize Arizona has a huge Hispanic population. I doubt her brown skin would be a reason to stop her.

  • Krissu

Aquarius, I don’t agree with you.
I myself am Legal immigrant. I do have a slight accent, but overall not too bad. I don’t carry green card with me but it would not be difficult to establish my status.
As someone not born in USA don’t mind if I do not share the same status/rights as those who are born in USA. If I want to become a citizen I have a right to do that and THEN I could/would have all rights US born citizens have.

I think it don’t matter if one wants to move to USA or Romania or Norway, the rules should always be the same – you do it LEGALLY and you learn the language and you respect local laws. It’s not right that first thing you do when your toes are over the border you break the law (illegal immigration), and then you whine that why nobody wants me here! Every country has enough criminals, no need to import to import them from other countries!

Right, cause if mature grownups can’t figure it out on their own, two teenagers will surely be able to make national decisions.

  • javi

arizona its becoming more and more like nazi germany. but the difference here is instead of a star to identify jews now they have to check the color of your skin.

  • Anonymous

cause she looks nothing like an “American”

  • Anonymous

It is based on looks, anyone can be a citizen, have a thick accent & not able to understand English too well because perhaps they’re new to the country. But what do you say about the ones who speak English fluently & don’t fit their idea of an illegal immigrant? They won’t get stopped because according to the AZ law, they won’t appear to be illegal immigrants.

  • Anonymous

You do know that if someone is a legal immigrant and became an American citizen, they would still have to carry some proof just because they don’t look American. For example I myself is a legal immigrant, I’m a US citizen with an accent, if I go to Arizona… they are still going to ask me for identification. I believe that that’s not fair and that I would consider as a racist act towards me.

  • Krissu

I put it on the same level with airport security.
We all know terrorism is a huge problem for America. Therefore most ppl (with few exceptions) understand those airport pat downs and Xrays and all the rest that comes with it. We have all read the horror stories how elderly woman are told to pull down their panties and basically moon to the custom officers and other things similar. As long as terrorism is a problem, ppl are willing to put up with it.
Illegal immigration is also a problem. The borders are basically open for everybody. If I were a citizen I would be willing to put up with having to prove my status. Maybe (hopefully) one day all illegals are deported and borders are closed and then we don’t have to deal with this crap anymore, but that day is far away.
You can say that terrorism and illegal immigration are not on the same level, but neither are pat down that basically shows their fingers in your private area, or Xrays that allow a stranger to check your body out, and simply having cops check your status.
Some states have more trouble with illegals then others. AZ is one of them. I would give them some free range to handle it.
After all, I do not support illegal immigration!

  • Krissu

What do you mean “don’t fit their idea of illegal immigrant”? You either are illegal immigrant or you are not. It’s like saying someone is little bit pregnant.

  • Krissu

and for your information, nobody gets stopped for “appearance or the way they speak english” anyway. They have to be stopped for something else illegal.

  • Chloe

She looks as American as anyone else.

  • Chloe

Then they should stop all people who have accents. Irish, German, Russian, French etc. It is not about the accent is racial profiling pure and simple.

  • Chloe

    AMEN Lily0x…you tell’em.

  • Chloe

That is just it Krissu you would be stopped just because of how you look. This is a very dangerous law. We are going to end up with another Rodney King situation. Is racial profiling….

  • leo626

@ krissu you say you want illegal immgration to be deported but have yu ever tought whos gonna pick your fruit everyday becausei sure bet you wouldn’t go for a couple of cents like illegal immirgation and this arizon law is stuipd because the united states was built on illegal immigration,

  • Nick

What does an American look like? We are all immigrants except for Native Americans…

  • Krissu

Chloe, you just proved that you and Missy really don’t know what this law is about!
    Thank you!

  • Krissu

Chloe, they DO NOT stoop ppl because of how they look or because of their accents. If they would stop[ ppl because f their accent then yes, they would have to stop ppl with those accents, and I am sure they would do.
But only way AZ police can ask someone about his immigration status is if they are already stopped for doing something else illegal. Like speeding.

But I have to add here, it has no bearing on the law itself, but….. can you tell me what nationality are most illegals here? Are they mostly from Ireland, Germany, Russia…. or are they from some other countries?

  • Krissu

Leo, you do realize that we have plenty of LEGAL immigrants in this country, right? Legal immigrants who do pick you fruit, who do wash dishes in restaurants and so on.

Why do they have to be illegal to mow your lawn?

  • http://www.facebook.com/xataii Xata Jota

I’m not american, I’m brazillian and I think this law is very offensive. I’ve been to america, as well as my familly, as a tourist to visit disneyland, NYC and some other places and we would love to go back over and over again ’cause we loved your country. I would be offended if I get to AZ and someone ask for my papers…
It’s offensive enough have to open my bag in the airport and take off my shoes while I see the european tourist (as I can tell he is for his passport) goes straight through while me and my family get the humiliation of having to open bags and take off shoes in almost every airport we go in US… but I understand that’s not every american, but by making this prejudice a law is the same to say that every american in AZ agree with this kind of behavior…
I hope when you come to Brazil you will feel happy to enjoy your vocation, not humiliated by airport security just because you are american…

  • olivia

All this racism needs to stop. We latinos are humans too. We came here with a dream, to have a better life. The majority of us are well rounded, we are good people. We commit mistakes but so do you! All you guys are doing is destroying our lives, and most importantly breaking our families apart. You are deporting latinos because they are illegal, and i get thats a bad thing but we deserve a chance!!!

  • Krissu

You deserve a chance once you start respecting the laws and enter US legally!
That is when you deserve your chance!

Yes, of course you are humans too, and want to have a better life, however since you are not born in this country, America don’t OWE you anything.
It’s up to you to prove America why you DESERVE a new beginning in USA!
(This is for those latinos who are here illegally, not to all of them!)

  • Tiara

If you were born here, you are not an immigrant.

  • leo626

@ krissu i dont think legal american are gonna want to work in a farm picking fruits for so little money how about you go and try it and see if you like it

  • Nick

Right, you’re just descended from them. Get off your high horse.

  • YouAREANImbecile

There is no American look, you idiot! How can one “look” American? Haven’t you learned anything from the article?! WOW YOU’RE AN IDIOT, LMAO!

  • ANOTHERIDIOT

Another idiot. I have an accent when I speak English because Spanish is my first language, yet I WAS BORN HERE, therefore I AM AN AMERICAN. Whether you like it or not, stupid.

  • Fckingstupid

It’s called RACIAL PROFILING — YES, THEY DO STOP PEOPLE BASED ON THE WAY THEY LOOK. DIDN’T YOU READ THE DAMN ARTICLE??

  • my name is G

The constitution of the United States of America guarantees freedom of speech. Lets just try to speak about real factual things. Don’t let the television media and the half written articles in the newpapers get you all crazy. Enough of the swearing and blaming. We are all here in this country right now.(legal immigrants, illegal immigrants, and people that were born here). There are way too many of us, and it creates a mind numbing deficit for anyone who is a hard worker and who pays their taxes. This money that is needed to support illegal immigrants doesn’t grow on trees. It comes from taxes paid by working americans. So yes! deport illegal immigrants, as they are sucking the life out of the rest of us. I am a struggling american, and I can barely survive. I would “like a better life” too (as most illegal immigrants claim as their reason for coming to America)…..but you don’t see me crossing into another country and demanding they give me food, shelter, health care, a place for my babies to go to school, and any other assistance that is available. Its quite a dilemma we are in, and that is why this controvArizona law even got to where it is. We are tired of supporting people that don’t do anything of value for this country. So this is where we are…making up new laws that end up inconveniencing some people, and catching the ones who need to be sent out of here.

there is such thing as an American look. Selena Gomez might look American to you, but to some others she looks like a Spanish decent. The thing about American looks is like brown or blonde hair with white skin. I’m a legal immigrant that became a US citizen recently, if I go to Arizona, I know for sure that I’m going to have to bring proof of identification. You in the other is probably a “true” American, its all biased and all on the opinions. Yes it’s true there is no specific “look” to be an American, but it’s all about opinions and biased. It’s the truth, idiot.

  • Anonymous

you’re only saying that because you know she’s an American citizen. Her heritage is Spanish. In fact in my opinion the reason Justin was considered more of an American is by his look which is his blonde hair. It’s all about how people picture what an American looks like and its all biased.

  • Nobody

Jeez you can’t tell someone’s heritage by their look I’m a blonde but I’m from Africa see
There is no look for any heritage you can look like nothing but stil be from a very different place
But it’s hilarious the fact that they used justin and selena as evidence lol

  • Nobody

I’m a British citizen but I’m from Africa although I do look more British then African but there is no look for any place
You can look like anything but still be from somewhere different
There is no LOOK for any heritage
