WATCH: Selena Gomez Shares Emotional Video Diary From AMAs Performance
Selena Gomez has shared a new video diary taking fans through the emotional roller coaster behind her performance of “The Heart Wants What It Wants” at last month’s American Music Awards. It marked her live debut of the track, which explores her up-and-down relationship with Justin Bieber, and Gomez’s singing left pal Taylor Swift and others near tears. Now there’s footage showing everything that went into the moment.
The video follows Gomez as she rehearses the song in the days leading up to the AMAs. She listens to one of her favorite worship songs to get to a certain place emotionally, and tells the camera, “This performance is a little bit frightening.” Gomez explains, “When I had the intention behind the performance, I knew that I wanted it to be all of me, because somebody asked me a while ago, ‘What’s the one thing you wish people knew about you?’ And I said I wanted it to be my heart.”
We see Gomez getting glam in the hotel and then heading over to the red carpet. “Everybody is there and all glamorous, so fun… but then, I gotta be all emotional,” says the star, surveying the crowd. “Feels like a lump in my throat.”
Gomez does vocal exercises backstage, has a group prayer session, and heads to the stage, looking nervous and almost overwhelmed. After her performance, the relief washes over her as Gomez’s team congratulates her and shows her the positive response from fans. It’s an interesting behind-the-scenes look at a very public moment.
