Scott Stapp Reveals He Has Bipolar Disorder: “I’m Lucky To Be Alive”
Scott Stapp is finally opening up about his very public psychotic break last year, and reveals in a new interview that he’s since been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. “I’m lucky to be alive,” says Stapp, admitting that the initial diagnosis was “hard to process” because “there’s a stigma associated with it.”
As Gossip Cop reported, the former Creed frontman had a meltdown last year when he started posting disturbing Facebook videos ranting about being “penniless” and under a “pretty vicious attack.” He also believed that he was part of the CIA and had been tasked with assassinating President Obama.
In a new interview with People, Stapp explains that he had a “psychotic break that was brought on by alcohol and drug abuse.” He says, “I was hallucinating. I drove around the United States for a month, following an angel that I saw on the hood of my car. In my delusional thinking, I thought my family was involved in ISIS, and that millions of dollars had been taken from me to support terrorism. All of it was nonsense. I was out of my mind.”
Stapp says he eventually sought treatment at a duel diagnostic facility, and that’s when he was told he was bipolar. The rocker’s wife, Jaclyn, notes that once Stapp received the diagnosis everything suddenly “made sense.” She says, “I definitely knew there was something going on for years, but I couldn’t pinpoint what it was.”
While Stapp says it was hard to accept he had bipolar disorder, the rocker confesses it was “a big sigh of relief because finally we had an answer.” To help keep his disorder under control, Stapp is on medication, goes to therapy, and is part of a 12-step program.
