“Scandal” Abortion Slammed By Conservative Watchdog Group (VIDEO)
“Scandal” is getting slammed for depicting an abortion on Thursday’s winter finale. See video below.
As Gossip Cop reported, about halfway through the episode, Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) went to a doctor’s office to abort a baby, though before that, viewers had no idea she was even pregnant. The scene featured Olivia on a medical table with her legs spread as a doctor turned on a machine and began the procedure. The unexpected moment came amid a related storyline in which Senator Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young) did a filibuster to prevent a spending bill that could have eventually led to the defunding of Planned Parenthood.
Both aspects of the show sparked an immediate debate on social media, with some viewers saying they will never watch again due to the abortion scene, which was scored with a Christmas-inspired soundtrack. And now the Media Research Center is ripping the hit ABC series for the storyline. In a statement, the conservative watchdog organization says:
“Hollywood’s liberal values permeate movies and television. Last night’s episode of ABC’s ‘Scandal’ was pretty much an hour-long advertisement for Planned Parenthood. In the most disturbing scene, the main character has an abortion to ‘Silent Night’ (a hymn celebrating the birth of Jesus) playing in the background. This is Hollywood’s moral depravity on full display.”
In contrast, others have praised “Scandal” for taking a pro-choice stance. In its own lengthy statement, Planned Parenthood says:
“Tonight, the millions of people who tune into ‘Scandal’ every Thursday night learned that our rights to reproductive health care are under attack. Never one to shy away from critical issues, Shonda Rhimes used her platform to tell the world that if Planned Parenthood lost funding for contraception counseling, STI testing, cancer screenings, and safe, legal abortion — millions of people would suffer. And this episode wasn’t the first time one of Rhimes’ characters had an abortion, yet tonight we saw one of our favorite characters make the deeply personal decision that one in three women have made in their lifetime. We applaud Shonda Rhimes tonight — and every Thursday night – for proving that when women are telling our stories, the world will pause and watch. We just hope those in Congress — and throughout the nation — who are steadfast on rolling the clock back on reproductive health care access are taking note.”
The abortion and Planned Parenthood storylines seemed to be ripped from the headlines and inspired by Texas State Senator Wendy Davis’ own filibuster to prevent an anti-abortion bill in 2013. The Shonda Rhimes series is known for taking on controversial topics, with a recent episode playing off the Bill Cosby sexual assault scandal, while one last year was seemingly inspired by the unrest in Ferguson.
