Sarah Hyland Opens Up To Meredith Vieira About Abusive Relationship – VIDEO
Sarah Hyland has spoken up for the first time about being a victim of abuse at the hands of her ex-boyfriend Matt Prokop. The “Modern Family” sat down with Meredith Vieira, who told the young actress, “I related to your story because I was exactly your age, 23, when I went through something similar.”
As Gossip Cop previously reported, Hyland obtained a permanent restraining order against Prokop, who she alleged choked her and abused her both verbally and physically for the last four years of their relationship. Hyland said in court papers, Prokop pinned her against a car by her throat and called her a “c*nt.” She noted, “His grip was so tight that I could not breathe or speak. I was scared and in fear for my life.”
While talking to the young actress, Vieira host brought up that she too had a harrowing experience with an ex-boyfriend, but recently discussed it on-air to let others know, “You can come though adversity and be strong on the other side… You are not alone.” At that point, Vieira asked Hyland how she has dealt with her adversity.
The actress says she lives by quotations from two poets: “One is a Dylan Thomas poem. ‘Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light,’ which is one of my favorite poems. It just strikes a chord in me.” Hyland also quotes Robert Frost: “The only way out is through.” She explains, “People have to go through things in order to become the person they are today, and that’s that.”
