San Andreas Wins Weekend Box Office
San Andreas won the box office’s top spot in its weekend debut. The disaster film, starring Dwayne Johnson, took in a total weekend take of $53.2 million, which was well above weekend estimates. The hefty haul gave Johnson his biggest solo project opening ever.
The musical comedy Pitch Perfect 2 came in a distant second with $14.8 million. That was enough to edge out the George Clooney fantasy adventure film Tomorrowland, which ended up in third place with $13.8 million this weekend. Nabbing the fourth spot was the action movie Mad Max: Fury Road, bringing in $13.6 million in ticket sales. Avengers: Age of Ultron is still hanging tough at the box office, earning another $10.9 million. The film’s total gross is $427 million.
Rounding out the top 10 was the Bradley Cooper romantic comedy Aloha, which opened in sixth place with $10 million. The horror remake Poltergeist came in seventh place with $7.8 million, while the Victorian-era drama Far from the Madding Crowd took in just $1.5 million for the eighth position. The Sofia Vergara/Reese Witherspoon buddy comedy Hot Pursuit came in ninth place with a box office draw of $1.4 million, and the Rihanna animated kids movie Home made the cut in tenth place with $1.2 million.
