Samantha Johnson “America’s Got Talent” Video: Singer Gets Standing Ovation For Sam Smith’s “Lay Me Down” — WATCH!
Samantha Johnson received a standing ovation during the “Judges’ Cuts” round on Tuesday’s “America’s Got Talent,” after doing a flawless cover of “Lay Me Down” by Sam Smith. Watch below!
The 26-year-old earned four yesses for her initial audition, something she now called the “most rewarding experience” of her life so far. Abandoned by her mother, who had taught her music, as a teen, Johnson explained, “I’m the singer I am today because of the good things that have happened and the bad things that have happened in my life.” She further told the judges, “I need this. I want this. It’s the right time.”
The gorgeous, smooth vocal led Heidi Klum to her feet. She told Johnson afterward, “Well, you just have that special something that not a lot of singers have. I absolutely loved it. Thank you so much. That was really beautiful.”
Howie Mandel said to Johnson’s dad in the audience, “You have to be so proud. This is not my daughter, I can only imagine if it was.” And Mel B seemed stunned, exclaiming, “My gosh.” The Spice Girl went on to explain, “It’s just crazy what you can do, and how you do it, and how easy you make it seem, and how beautiful you sound. It’s mind-blowing for me.”
Guest judge Neil Patrick Harris admitted he felt the odds were against Johnson, as he was jaded from the plethora of singing competition shows. He told Johnson, “In order to wow me on this stage, it really has to be something different and extraordinary — and you are all of that.”
With those rave reviews, it was no surprise Johnson survived the cut, and was one of the night’s seven acts selected to go on to the live shows at Radio City Music Hall. Check out the video below!
