Sam Smith “Writing’s On The Wall” Oscars Video: Watch James Bond “Spectre” Academy Awards Performance!
Sam Smith performed “Writing’s On The Wall” from the James Bond movie Spectre at the 2016 Oscars. Check out the video below!
As Gossip Cop has reported, Smith first teased that he was recording the theme song for the latest Bond film last September, and an official announcement came the very next day. The track was ultimately released later that month, weeks before Spectre hit theaters. Smith, who co-wrote the song, set a Guinness World Record by being the first artist to have a James Bond theme go to number one on the UK singles chart.
That said, “Writing’s On The Wall” wasn’t nearly as successful in the U.S., peaking at number 71 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at 20 on the Adult Contemporary Chart. It was also snubbed for a Grammy nomination. Still, the song won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song in January, and is now nominated in the same category here at the Academy Awards.
The last James Bond theme, of course, was Adele’s “Skyfall,” which won the Best Original Song Oscar in 2013, and also triumphed at the Golden Globes and Brit Awards. And despite previous themes from Shirley Bassey, Paul McCartney, Madonna, and more superstars, Adele’s version was the first to win an Academy Award in the franchise’s history. Interestingly, though, the song wasn’t included on the official Skyfall soundtrack, and “Writing’s On The Wall” doesn’t appear on the soundtrack for Spectre.
Smith’s Oscars performance was introduced by Sarah Silverman, who made a number of sex-related quips about Bond. Watch below.
