In a genius casting move, Sacha Baron Cohen has been tapped to play Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in an upcoming movie.
The film, being scripted by Peter Morgan, who wrote The Queen, The Last King of Scotland, and The Other Boleyn Girl, will tell the story of Queen’s early years, leading pretty much up to the band’s triumphant performance at Live Aid in 1985.
It will not focus, according to Deadline, on Mercury’s last years and battle with AIDS.
Mercury died in November 1991.
This marks the first time the surviving members of Queen – who will be involved with the production – have given a film permission to use their songs, including “Another One Bites The Dust,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “We Are the Champions,” and “We Will Rock You.”
