Ryan Seacrest is being pursued as a possible replacement for Matt Lauer on the “Today Show,” according to reports.

NBC executives met with Seacrest on Tuesday to discuss the possibility of succeeding Lauer if the longtime co-anchor leaves his seat in 2012, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The Seacrest-for-Lauer story was first reported by Mediaite back in August.

There have been no reported deals, or anything beyond preliminary conversations.

Gossip Cop has reached out to reps for both Seacrest and the “Today Show.”

We will have updates.

It’s important to note: Lauer may not be leaving, but NBC is having discussions about a potential succession plan should he decide to leave.

Ryan Seacrest doesn’t have any news credibility. He’s a glorified radio disc jokey. The Today Show is out of their mind if they consider him for this.

I know it’s just talks right now, but I hope they land Ryan (if Matt leaves). he’s the best!!!

OH brother will he bring the Kardashins with him there too.. UGH. Were already getting them shoved down our throats from every angle & Ryan is the person that started it. Please help us..

This decision would complete the Today Show;s transition to a tabloid. It is moving in that direction and bringing this guy on would seal the deal. He is not a journalist and probably would have everyone from E on the show on a regular basis. Horrible decision if true.

If Matt leaves, so will I. Matt is the ONLY reason to watch the Today Show. Where Matt goes so will many people. The Today Show will lose their top spot if he leaves and they replace him with Ryan Seacrest. Sad NBC……sad, sad, sad.

It would fit- the today show has become like a 2hour TMZ/Inside Edition thing. It has been going down fast… so, yeah, why not kill off a 50year+ show with Seacrest? would he demand it be done in L.A.? 3 hours later than now?

Oh hell no. I can see it now putting all the no talents on the show for paoyla like he does with his radio show. These artist bring their music to Ryan for him to play it over & over again for a price. I watch the Today Show every morning but if this dude is going to be apart of it I shall watch another news station.
