Entertainment Weekly announced last week that it had named Reynolds its 2016 honoree. Now for the first time, the award was formally presented during the Critics’ Choice ceremony as part of the magazine’s new partnership with the awards show. The presentation to Reynolds was introduced by the magazine’s editorial director, Jess Cagle.
Upon taking the stage, Reynolds said, “My god, okay. I’ve got to start by thanking the entire Deadpool team, without whom I would not be standing up here.” The actor noted he worked on the project for 10 years, and, since his character had cancer, the film resonated with sick children, which now inspired him to dedicate this award to Make-A-Wish, and to two young fans in particular.
“They didn’t lose a battle, but they started a fight and it’s up to finish us,” Reynolds said. He went on to quip, “I also want to thank my wife. And for no reason at all, I suppose my children.”
In addition to this special award, Reynolds also went into tonight nominated for Best Actor in a Comedy Movie and Best Actor in an Action Movie. Both nods were for Deadpool, which far exceeded expectations both critically and commercially when it hit theaters earlier this year. Coincidentally, the film also starred T.J. Miller, who is hosting tonight’s ceremony and also joined Cagle in the tribute to Reynolds. Watch video of Reynolds’ acceptance speech at the 2016 Critics’ Choice Awards below!
