Ryan Lochte Robbed In Rio At Gunpoint – Watch ‘Today’ Show Interview (VIDEO)
Ryan Lochte was robbed at gunpoint in Rio early Sunday. The swimmer revealed new details about the frightening experience on Monday’s “Today” show. Watch the video below.
Initially, Lochte’s mother, Ileana, told news outlets that her son had been held up but oddly the swimmer’s coach and a spokesman for the International Olympic Committee denied her claim. Now, Lochte himself told NBC’s Billy Bush that he and three other swimmers had guns pulled on them by people posing as cops.
Lochte said in an interview on Monday, “We got pulled over, in the taxi, and these guys came out with a badge, a police badge, no lights, no nothing just a police badge and they pulled us over.” He added, “They pulled out their guns They told the other swimmers to get down on the ground. They got down on the ground. I refused. I was like we didn’t do anything wrong, so I’m not getting down on the ground.” Lochte noted he ultimately complied when another one of the men pretending to be a cop “pulled out his gun, he cocked it, put it to my forehead and he said, ‘Get down.'”
The swimmer explained he then put up his hands and and the fake policeman “took our money. He took my wallet. He left my cell phone. He left my credentials.” A U.S. Olympic Committee spokesman later said in a statement that Lochte and three other members of the U.S. swimming team “left France House early Sunday morning in a taxi headed for the Olympic Village. Their taxi was stopped by individuals posing as armed police officers who demanded the athletes’ money and other personal belongings. All four athletes are safe and cooperating with authorities.”
As Gossip Cop reported in an earlier version of this story, Lochte’s mom told USA Today her son was held up with other Team USA members and “they’re all shaken up.” She said the gunmen “just took their wallets,” and that she planned to see her son later on Sunday.
