Ryan Lochte beat fellow U.S. swimmer Michael Phelps in the 400-meter individual medley at the Summer Olympics in London on Saturday, dethroning the world’s most successful Olympian and cementing Lochte’s rise as one of the stars of these Games.

The 27-year-old won the gold medal with a time of 4 minutes, 5.18 seconds, faster than Brazil’s Thiago Pereira and Japan’s Kosuke Hagino.

“I think I’m kind of in shock right now,” said Lochte following his victory.

Phelps, who barely qualified for the event, failed to win a medal for the first time since the 2000 Sydney Olympics, when he was 15.

Since then, he’d competing in 16 events — winning 14 gold medals and two bronzes.

It was Lochte’s seventh medal overall, after having collected four golds, two silvers and a bronze over the course of the 2004 and 2008 Games.

After the race, Phelps congratulated Lochte on Twitter, writing, “Congrats to @ryanlochte … Way to keep that title in the country where it belongs!!”

Phelps sounded hopeful about the rest of this Olympiad, tweeting, “Not pleased with my race tonight at all… But tom is a new day! And a new race!!”

He still has six more events in London, and remains two medals behind Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina’s record of 18.

Will Phelps get the record? Will Lochte be the face of these Olympics?

We’ll find out over the next two weeks.

Since the race hasn’t aired yet in prime time, I guess I’ll have to stay off if the web for the next two weeks. I would have skipped the article to save the suspense, but the headline blew it. Sigh…

  • Lauren

Yeah that kinda sucked, this was one of the races I was looking forward to this evening.

  • Sheelly

Humbleness? Have you ever heard this guy speak? He’s got an ego bigger than his home country!

  • Amealea

Ugh. Spoiler alert. Thanks a lot :(

  • Carol

Dude…don’t post until after the race has aired!

Why isn’t NBC running the events live? Grrrrr

Read or watch more than one interview. Seriously, he is a lot more laid back and humble than you think. Also, USA is not the country with the biggest ego (though we do need ours in check sometimes).

  • Claire

Thanks for clarifying this fact Andrew…..I’ve followed him for quite a while & he’s really a lot of fun to watch…especially when he ‘lets loose’ on his skate board! He’s just not full of himself and is an ordinary guy.

Looks like Tyler Clary was right. Phelps didn’t train hard enough. Lochte is hard core on training.

I think he trained to beat Phelps because he knew that was what it would take to win.

So does this mean Phelps isn’t the golden child anymore?

  • Bocaspindoctor

The girl who interviewed Michael Phelps on NBC after he lost the swim race should be FIRED! What an idiot to humiliate him like that and he was such a gentlemen after obviously upset with losing. Her questions should be all over the internet. Who hired this insensitive idiot?

Don’t the events start really late here because of the time difference? Canadian TV is running the events live starting at 4:00 a.m.
