Russell Brand Says He’s “Quite Well,” Skates Around Katy Perry Questions

Russell Brand only indirectly referenced his breakup with Katy Perry during a Television Critics Association event on Sunday for his upcoming FX late-night series.

One day after another divorcing couple, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony, met with reporters to promote their own new series, Brand made his first major appearance since he and Perry split.

While discussing his show, currently titled “Strangely Uplifting,” Brand was asked how he’s doing.

“Quite well, thank you,” he replied.

But Brand wasn’t done.

“Are you asking because of recent events?” wondered the comedian. “You are making the mistake of seeing time as linear. The brilliant American author Kurt Vonnegut, he’ll tell you that if you imagine reality as experienced simultaneously, events become redundant.”

Well then.

As far as whether his new show will contain autobiographical discussions, Brand remained philosophical.

“I don’t want to further celebrate the overly elaborate, brittle plastic structures of nonsense that are constantly fired into our minds to distract us from what’s really important,” explained the comedian.

He continued, “So if I’d done something newsworthy… I’d cover it. But if it was just more lacquered nonsense, designed to distract us from truth, then I would wisely ignore it.”

We’ll take that to mean that fallout from his split with Perry will not be a major point of discussion on the show.

“Strangely Uplifting” will premiere this spring, although no date has been set.

At least neither one of them are tryin to exploit their breakup. Unlike Lopez & Anthony, who are obviously beig all affectionate for the sake of their projects.

I think he’s brilliant and greatly overlooked on purpose because the statements that he makes carry too much weight to keep the attention of the celebrity machine. Even GC’s comment “well then” is indicative that Brand is talking well above their heads when he eloquently states, to paraphrase, that focusing on a celebrity’s personal life is a distraction from truly newsworthy events and he isn’t going to participate.

I found the statements that he made in the wake of Amy Winehouse’s death to have endeared him to me more than I ever expected.
